This position provides legal support to the Global Merchant Services (GMS) business, a core business of American Express and fundamental to the operation of the American Express network. GMS builds and maintains relationships with merchants that choose to accept American Express products by signing merchants, either directly or through third parties, processing transactions and providing marketing and other innovative programs and services. The primary focus of this position is to advise the GMS unit that manages the signing of new merchants and the enablement of B2B suppliers on the American Express network.
Role & Responsibilities:
Help propel your team and its business partners to success.
Here’s just some of what you’ll do in this role:
Provide primary legal support to dynamic sales organization in the face of challenges posed by fintechs and quickly evolving regulatory environment
Provide concise, business-oriented legal analysis on innovative marketing initiatives to bring Amex products to new merchant customers
Develop best-in-class sales practices and related compliance programs designed to achieve business goals while protecting the Company’s brand and reputation
Provide counseling and support to GMS teams on strategic legal and policy matters, compliance and operational processes, also with focus on disruptive changes in marketplace and regulatory and litigation environment.
Coordinate with GCO colleagues and outside counsel, Compliance, Risk, Pricing, Operations and business development leads, and cross-functional teams, to ensure the most effective support and relevant expertise is applied to particular matters.
Support identification and implementation of process improvements to streamline contract-related processes.
Participate in a small team of seasoned attorneys and legal managers, offering thought leadership for cross-subject matter practice group issues and projects.
Effective, cost-conscious targeted engagements of outside counsel, with a disciplined approach to budget management.

Bachelor’s degree & J.D.
Admitted to New York Bar or eligibility to do so
6 years of relevant legal experience
Specific experience and knowledge in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating complex commercial agreements
Experience drafting, negotiating and advising clients on complex commercial agreements
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Ability to generate creative and innovative solutions to novel issues
Ability to communicate complex issues clearly and persuasively, in both written and oral format
Ability to build relationships and partner with others to drive results
Capacity to be agile and pivot appropriately when challenged with new information or evolving circumstances
Excellent collaboration, inter-personal and teamwork skills
Exceptional written and verbal communications skills; ability to communicate and relate at all levels of the organization and with external constituencies and to drive consensus and exert influence in a cross- functional capacity
Ability to develop in-depth knowledge of business operations and apply that understanding in furnishing legal advice
Self-motivated, high level of personal energy and commitment
Strong leadership skills, growth mindset and strong customer focus
Experience in the banking, finance,or payments industry, and/or experience providing support for large sales organizations
