Police Athletic League Director of Education and Training in New York, New York

The Police Athletic League (PAL) is the largest independent youth organization in New York City that provides educational and recreational activities for children and young adults. PAL Inc. and The New York City Police Department work in partnership to provide communities with summer and after-school recreational and educational activities.

We are looking for a Director of Education provide leadership and direction for curriculum and instruction in afterschool programs, and other educational initiatives. This senior manager will be responsible for the conception, development, and implementation of the educational curriculum, and will supervise PAL’s citywide enrichment programming. All site-level agency Education Coordinators and Specialists report to the Director of Education. The Director must understand and support the mission, vision, and goals of the Police Athletic League as she or he carries out program and budget development duties and contract compliance responsibilities.

Major Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop and oversee the implementation of educational initiatives, which includes the completion of action plans and submission of agency quarterly and annual progress reports.

  • Monitor and Evaluate all programs to ensure effective delivery of curriculum and achievement of program outcomes.

  • Manage and provide guidance to education staff

  • Conduct formal and informal observations, and provide constructive feedback.

  • Ensure that all curricula are age-appropriate and aligned to state and local educational standards.

  • Ensure that academic enrichment programming is comprehensive and supports the multiple program goals and outcomes in accordance with various funding agency contractual obligations.

  • Ensure contract compliance with federal, state, and city government agencies overseeing the funding of PAL educational programs.

  • Ensure related financial and program reports are correct and in compliance with all stakeholders on a scheduled basis.

  • Establish collaborations with community organizations and schools.

  • Monitor changing trends in educational approaches and make recommendations to senior staff to make applicable modifications in agency educational program approaches.

  • Recruit, interview, hire, and train staff and volunteers.

  • Provide leadership, direction, training, and support to Education Department staff to ensure desired educational goals and outcomes are met.

  • Assess and evaluate staff and programs on a scheduled and consistent basis.

  • Counsel, discipline, recommend for promotions or pay increases, and terminate staff as needed and in compliance with PAL and respective government agencies.

Education and Experience

  • A minimum of five years of work experience in administering education-related programs while working in a leadership capacity; or five years’ experience with a social service agency that includes multi-site operations and professional staff supervision. Teaching experience and certifications are strongly preferred.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field from an accredited college. A Master’s degree with demonstrated leadership training is strongly preferred.

  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to carry out the duties of the Director of Education.

Skills and Knowledge Required

  • Leadership skills and experience; ability to articulate agency goals.

  • Solid workshop training and facilitation skills.

  • Familiarity with NYC Department of Education Learning Standards.

  • Experience in curriculum planning, development, and writing.

  • Strong analytical, problem solving, verbal, and written communications skills and ability to work with staff in various disciplines and at all organizational levels.

  • Proficiency in the use of computers and excellent familiarity with Excel and Word.

  • Ability to prioritize workflow and excellent detail orientation and time-management skills.
