Position Summary

Columbia Business School IT team seeks a seasoned Director of IT Projects with project management experience and a proven track record of working on technology initiatives. Reporting to the Executive Director of Technology Services and Support, this individual will support the technology Portfolio, Program, and specific project management activities. The ideal candidate should have advanced analytical skills and applicable knowledge of business analysis and project management tools, techniques, and best practices. Provides managerial oversight of all aspects of IT project work to clients. Provides world class service to senior staff, key stakeholders, and other VIPs. Manages and oversees day to-day activities and performance of the Assistant Director of IT Projects to ensure all school project needs are met. Serves as a senior member of the team to mentor, train new staff and set team goals. Works to coach and counsel staff to accomplish goals. Liaises with relevant clients and senior staff on ongoing operations and to lead various initiatives. Regularly serves as Project Manager.

The Director will play a key role ensuring that solutions and outcomes effectively meet the needs of Columbia Business School and its clients. As required, they may be called upon to work independently or closely with technology project leads, managing multiple advanced assignments across different initiatives. Typical assignments may include, but are not limited to, gathering and managing requirements, discovery and analysis, costing and budget management, and testing and validation. Assignments necessitate engagement across Business School operations and at different phases in the service or project management lifecycle.

Successful applicants will have experience working with internal and external clients, collecting and organizing data, have the ability to define collection methodology, templates, and tools, and be skilled at defining and prioritizing work in an efficient manner.


  1. Independently works to elicit, record and analyze requirements to enable traceability to a desired customer outcome. Documents dependencies and interrelationships among requirements, as well as any assumptions and congregations. Utilizes advanced techniques to capture existing, new, and unknown requirements (e.g., brainstorming, process work-flow diagrams, qualitative and quantitative analysis, reverse engineering). Uses tools that promote better understanding of the desired end-product such as visual aids, prototyping, and simulation.

  2. Oversees and manages a small team and relevant service areas. Sets team goals, coaches and counsels’ staff to accomplish goals. Has performance management responsibility for team. Oversees all levels of activities including project lifecycle, process improvements, and strategic initiatives.

  3. Independently works with all stakeholders professionally, with minimal supervision, and with appropriate messaging. Completes business case and impact analysis on implementing new changes. Documents and clearly articulates the ‘as is’, ‘to be’ and transitional states for impacted users and delivery teams.

  4. Oversees projects involving software/hardware customizations and moderate/complex software/hardware infrastructure. Manages all escalation questions of assigned services. Ensures team member receives adequate training and on-going mentoring. Reviews work of the team for accuracy and overall quality. Direct project management responsibility for mid and large size projects.

  5. Partners with senior leadership stakeholders to confirm accuracy and completeness. Liaises between business units, technology teams and support teams to ensure the solution delivered meets all business needs and to avoid rework. Provides client engagement support to customers.

  6. Analyze, research and works to identify needs and evaluates alternative business solutions. Contributes to the definition, design and delivery of solutions in accordance with specified scope, requirements, quality standards and target delivery dates. Performs comprehensive testing activities including developing test scripts, test plans and test scenarios and proactively managing defect resolution. Produce documentation to support delivery of process or system training

  7. Oversees activities and strategically works to ensure that deployment of applications, systems, or processes meet all operational requirements and that service teams are comfortable supporting from day one. Completes full range of required project activities related to maintaining artifacts and documentation. Leads transitions from project efforts to operationalized services.

  8. Partners with senior leaders, and key School stakeholders to develop and maintain a comprehensive and inclusive strategic process and structure for intake, assessment, prioritization and approval of new requests. Engages and supports internal improvement initiatives as assigned.

  9. Oversight of all capital IT-related projects. Additional responsibilities and strategic projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required. 5-7 years related experience required.

Must have demonstrated excellence and expert level knowledge in project management, plus the analysis of both business processes and the design of technology-based solutions. Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Excellence in customer service is required, have a collaborative teamwork approach, be intensely focused on delivery and possess clear and concise verbal and written communication skills. Ability to understand, explain and present complex technical ideas to both technical and non-technical audiences at all levels in a persuasive and convincing manner required. Must have the ability to conceptualize and think creatively. Ability to adapt to changing priorities while managing multiple activities, and objectives necessary . Must have excellent computer skills, specifically in but not limited to, MS Office Suite, MS Visio, MS Project, and Google Apps. Enterprise-level expertise implementing cloud platform and large-scale solutions. Demonstrates excellence in a variety of competencies including teamwork/collaboration/ influencing, analytical thinking, communication, creative problem solving, leadership skills, and proven ability to act as a change agent. Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment needed. Ability to work with changing priorities and with multiple projects necessary. Ability to be precise and attentive to detail is essential. Ability to work with minimal supervision required. Must be able to work extended hours and weekends as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of industry standards and best practice frameworks including, PMI; SDLC; ITIL; Lean Six Sigma, Six Sigma; COBIT; ISO, GAAP strongly preferred. Experience with Service Now or comparable tool, Project Management scheduling tools desired.
