Position Summary

The Director for Residential Life, New York City Campus, serves as the architect for developing residential programs and services that specifically meet the needs of all students in residence. Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean for Students ( NYC ), the Director provide visionary leadership for the department, direct departmental operations, and work with all professional staff in Residential Life to develop a residential community of excellence, providing a highly supportive and educational environment in which students are challenged to achieve autonomy and independence, while understanding their own accountability within a community of learners.

Position Duties

The Director will report to the Senior Associate Dean for Students in New York City. They will work closely with the entire professional staff in housing to provide a high standard of service to resident students. The specific duties of this position include:

Supervision

  • Recruit, hire, onboard, train and supervise 2 Assistant Directors.

  • Indirectly supervise Residence Directors, Graduate Assistants, Resident Assistants, and student office staff.

  • Provide high-quality and on-going training and professional development for all professional staff members and student staff.

Departmental Leadership

  • Set departmental goals in alignment with University Strategic Plans (where appropriate) and the Dean for Students Office.

  • Establish implementation strategies for departmental goals, including those for professional and student staff selection and training.

  • Maintain accurate departmental policies and procedures.

  • Represent department in various University committees.

  • Work closely with Housing Operations to create collaborative working relationships and seamless service to students, including partnership on summer conferences.

  • Collaborate and partner with several University departments including Security, Counseling, Auxiliary Services, Facilities, IT, Admissions, Student Accounts, Financial Aid, Student Accessibility Services, and Student Engagement.

Residential Programming and Curriculum

  • Develop and manage residential life programming and community development agenda.

  • Provide leadership for planning, development, and execution of residential life educational curriculum, which may include living-learning communities, first-year interest groups, and academic initiatives.

  • Create and maintain programs aimed at connecting faculty members to residential students.

Community Standards

  • Serve as high-level hearing officer and mid-level appellate officer.

  • Work closely with Assistant/Associate Director for Community Standards to ensure appropriate processes are in place for conduct and student accountability

Crisis Management

  • Maintain an on-call schedule for staff.

  • Serve as senior member of on-call structure.

  • Serve as point person for residential student crisis management, ensuring appropriate support and follow-up is provided.

  • Serve on campus CARE team.

Assessment

  • Set goals, create learning outcomes, and provide direction for departmental assessment efforts.

  • Track departmental student involvement and incentive program.

Budget

  • Direct supervision and oversight of departmental budget.

  • Submit budget pressures and requests as needed.

  • Ensure staff follow appropriate financial policies and procedures.

  • Partner with Housing Operations to submit capital project requests.

Advisement

  • Advise RA Council.

  • Oversee the direction of the Residence Hall Association and National Residence Hall Honorary with support of staff.

Performs other such duties as may be assigned from time to time.

In compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, this position has been designated as a Campus Security Authority ( CSA ). CSAs are individuals at the University who, because of their function at the University, have an obligation under the Clery Act to notify the University of alleged Clery Crimes that are reported to them in good faith, or alleged Clery Crimes that they may personally witness. CSAs will be required to complete training with respect to the Clery Act and the responsibilities of a CSA .

Position Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Student Personnel Administration or related field required.

  • Previous residential experience, excellent leadership, management, communication and interpersonal skills required.

  • Position will require excellent communication, both verbal and written.

  • Requires facility with database management and MS Office programs.

  • Ability to learn and adapt to emerging technologies.

    Work Hours

Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM; evening and weekend hours (and/or responsiveness by phone or email) are often required.

This is a live-on position with significant crisis management/duty rotation responsibilities. There are several points during each year at which this staff member may be required to work evenings and weekends (e.g. “all hands” events such as move-in weekend, closing processes, RA selection). This staff member will also be required to be available by phone to respond to issues impacting the residential community. This staff member will be expected to be present in the residential life office from 9AM to 5PM every work day to provide continuity of service.

The staff member will be required to live in a university owned/leased apartment at no rental cost to the staff member. The costs of basic utilities will be covered by the university. In the event that residency for this position changes to “live off,” the staff member will be required to live within a 15 minute walking commute from the downtown campus area.

Salary Range $70,000 - $75,000
