The Riverside Church Education Coordinator - The Riverside Hawks in NEW YORK, New York

POSITION DETAILS:

Overall goal of the Education Coordinator is to work with each of the students and parents in the Riverside Hawks program and assist them with their educational goals, including (i) where necessary, assisting with the selection of, and gaining admission to, middle schools, high schools and college, as applicable, and (ii) achieving academic success at their respective elementary, middle and high schools. The Education Coordinator will be responsible for ongoing overall management of our education program that combines academic guidance and application assistance, interview prep, test prep, tutoring, homework help and summer education.

This is a hands-on role which includes grant-related and fundraising activities, implementing policies and procedures, and program facilitation. The Riverside Hawks are seeking an entrepreneurial Education Coordinator who has the passion and experience required to lead our academic programs for boys and girls ages 8-17. The successful candidate will be someone who can excite student athletes who want to succeed on and off the basketball court. The Education Coordinator will also develop a network of local constituencies to partner with the program and offer qualified student athletes academic guidance and support, tutoring and mentorship. The director will oversee and monitor the experience and be responsible for managing the program finances, and will help identify and pursue grant opportunities. The success of the program will require strong ties with the academic community (including admissions directors of relevant educational institutions), deep understanding of academic options and a keen ability to work with parents and kids.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in education or related field

  • At least two years of experience working with children and youth in an academic setting

  • Proficient in MS Office and experience with databases and social media tools

  • Experience with nonprofits and grant writing a plus.

  • Marketing ability to build support for our programs through partnerships in the community.

REQUIREMENTS

  • In-depth knowledge of academically high performing independent (prep and boarding), catholic and public middle schools and high schools and be able to provide expertise and support on the variety of options available for parents to consider for their boys and girls.

  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of New York middle school, high school and prep school application processes of, and admission exams for, independent (prep and boarding), catholic and public middle schools and high schools

  • Strong organizational and administrative skills

  • Ability to seek out and partner with other educational programs and entities

  • Self-starter, action-oriented, entrepreneurial approach to work

  • Capable of initiating and managing corporate sponsorship partnerships or other arrangements

  • Excellent interpersonal, written, oral, and computer skills

  • Some familiarity with high school athletics, particularly basketball

RESPONSIBILITES

The Education Coordinator is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Riverside Hawks education program and will be primarily responsible for providing academic guidance to each student athlete and their family. This includes:

  • Collaborate with the other members of the Riverside Hawks and Riverside Church staff to develop and implement the educational program

  • Work with other members of staff to recruit, train and supervise tutors.

  • Coordinate various components of the education program including (i) admissions exam preparation (i.e. SSAT, SAT, ACT, ISEE etc.), (ii) homework assistance, (iii) tutoring, (iv) career exploration and (v) providing middle school and high school (catholic, public, prep and boarding school) and college application assistance

  • Develop and maintain records (including report cards) of each student in the program and maintain an updated database of all educational activities

  • Develop and maintain regular periodic reports for parents and coaches regarding the students educational progress

  • Establish relationships with schools and develop and secure educational resources in conjunction with related entities in order to enrich the program

  • Where necessary assist Riverside parents with applying for financial aid and identifying outside scholarship opportunities

  • Manage the Program's relationships with its education partners, such as Inspiring Young Minds, Student Sponsor Partners, JCC, A-List and others

  • Develop and implement a Summer Leadership Program for Middle School students

  • Oversee the Riverside Scholarship Program and maintaining contact with each scholarship recipient to ensure continuing academic success.

  • Manage Riverside Hawks ongoing compliance with requirements of education program funding sources, including overseeing implementation of SuccessMaker program

  • Assist with development of funding sources and grant writing, drawn from variety of resources such as private donations, corporations, education institutions and foundations.
