The Police Athletic League (or PAL) is New York City's largest independent youth development nonprofit organization; since 1914, PAL has been a vibrant and vital institution and has served as an effective, critical bridge between police and communities across all five boroughs of the City. PAL operates diverse programs from Head Start, Day Care, and Universal Pre-K programs, to elementary and middle school after-school programs, and summer day camps, and summer Playstreets. PAL also runs evening teen centers and college readiness programs, as well as youth employment, juvenile justice, and year-round teen acting programs in collaboration with Emmy Award-winning actor and PAL Board member, Tony Danza. Competitive and recreational sports for children of all ages have been a cornerstone of PAL's youth development strategy from the beginning.

ABOUT THE POSITION

Reporting to PAL's Board of Directors, the incoming Executive Director will serve as a visionary leader for a $30 million nonprofit that provides life-changing programs and services to thousands of youth and families at more than two dozen locations throughout the five boroughs of New York City. In addition, the Executive Director will step into an organization that has the potential to play a pivotal role in reshaping the relationship between the NYPD and the communities it serves, and thus, to create a model for other cities across the country to follow. As such, the Executive Director will have the opportunity to work with a robust array of partners at every level of government, particularly within the youth development, education, law enforcement, and justice systems in New York, as well as high profile national and international stakeholders.

The Executive Director's responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to, the following areas of focus:

  • Strategic Leadership - Serve as PAL's senior-most executive, launching a new strategic planning process that will ensure the organization continues to evolve and expand its current programmatic work while overseeing the organizational culture and infrastructure enhancements and brand-building necessary for PAL to thrive long into the future

  • Team Management and Financial Oversight - Lead, with the support of the senior leadership team and staff, all operations, with ultimate accountability for the success of the organization, building and mentoring a high-performing team committed to advancing PAL's mission in support of New York City youth and families

  • Thought Leadership - Amplify the impact of PAL's many programs and initiatives, ensuring that PAL's work contributes to the national and international dialogue about the importance of healthy, equitable relationships between police departments and the communities they serve

  • Relationship Management and External Affairs - Serve as the primary external voice for the organization, appearing regularly in various media outlets, and enhancing PAL's relationships and partnerships with key stakeholders in all sectors of New York City, especially those in law enforcement, education, corporate and nonprofit organizations; in particular, work to deepen and further define PAL's longstanding relationship with the NYPD

  • Fundraising - Drive fundraising strategies and activities that diversify the revenues for PAL and lead to organizational sustainability and growth, ensuring the engagement of PAL's existing donor base while cultivating new supporters among government, corporate, foundation, and individual funders; engage other staff leaders and provide them with the support they need so that they can be part of driving successful fundraising

  • Program Leadership - Provide vision, oversight, and direction, ensuring continuous improvement of program delivery across all of PAL's various programs

  • Board Development - Work to develop, expand, and diversify PAL's Board of Directors, with the help of its President

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS

PAL is looking for a dynamic, driven leader who possesses the following qualifications:

  • Palpable passion for the mission and values of PAL, grounded in the belief that young people's individual strengths and capabilities can guide them to mature, productive adulthoods with our encouragement and commitment

  • Ability to compellingly convey PAL's mission, impact, and goals externally, in an authentic way that honors the communities and stakeholders that PAL supports

  • Minimum of seven years of senior leadership experience, with a minimum of 15 years of overall experience, required; specific expertise in building and leading teams for a high-impact youth development nonprofit, strongly preferred

  • Cultural fluency across issues of race, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, religion as well as other dimensions of diversity and global environments/locations; ability to establish and nurture relationships with a diverse body of stakeholders in different locations, rallying them towards shared goals

  • Strategic mindset, with a track record of partnering with leaders to build high-performing teams and Experienceinternal capacity with sound cost management

  • managing external-facing functions (fundraising, public affairs, government relations, community partnerships) required

  • Deftness in providing thought partnership and strategic advice, supporting colleagues in designing strategies, solving problems, deploying resources, and mitigating risks
