The New School Financial Aid Counselor in New York, New York
Responsibilities:
The New School seeks a Financial Aid Counselor to join our Enrollment Management team. This is a student centered role focused on providing immediate and comprehensive service to students and parents on funding the student’s education. The candidate will navigate Federal, State and Institutional regulatory requirements, awarding financial aid, calculating Federal need analysis eligibility, and performing detailed technical duties as it relates to student aid. The primary objective of this position is to support students through available information and resources to be able to attend and persist at The New School.
This is an administrative position governed by a Local 1205 Teamsters union contract.

Responsibilities
Maintain heavy volume of financial aid telephone calls and respond to email communications
Counsel students and families on federal, state and institutional aid sources, as well as loan and other financing options, such as private educational loans and the Extended Payment Plan
Calculate financial need and construct financial aid packages in accordance with federal and institutional formulae and guidelines
Perform Verification of applicant data and use Professional Judgment to adjust federal aid applicants’ eligibility
Reconcile student aid and loans
Collect and track financial aid documents
Certify student loan requests and counsel students on debt management issues
Present financial aid information at divisional Open Houses, Orientation Sessions, and other campus events
Provide consistent and accurate advice about financing options (including the monthly payment plan), billing, refunds, and tuition, fee and housing payments
Handle special projects as assigned
Seasonal evenings and weekends required

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree required
Experience in counseling, higher education, or customer service experience
Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
A professional, congenial and polite demeanor
Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a diverse team of professionals
Facility with Google Suite and databases
Knowledge of the financial aid process preferred
