Job Function

Reporting to the Director of Opportunity Programs, the Graduate Assistant provides various counseling and program services for the Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) Scholars, the Barnard Opportunity Program (BOP) students, and the Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP).

Position Summary Information

Essential Duties Summary
  1. Support a cohort of OP students by providing one-on-one and group academic advising
  2. Coordinate and facilitate activities and programs for OP students, including but not limited to site visits, conferences, and developmental workshops (academic, personal, career)
  3. Monitor and track student progress
  4. Assist with the coordination of the Mentoring Program
  5. Assist with the office communications, including but not limited to social media, newsletter, and bulletin board.
  6. Assist with the coordination of the summer academic program
  7. Assist with the coordination of the CSTEP Day Of Service
  8. Provide referrals for counseling and crisis intervention, and for students with physical and learning disabilities
  9. Collect data and maintain student records to assist with NYS grant reporting
  10. Attend CSTEP, HEOP and non-HEOP meetings and conferences as assigned
  11. Carry out special projects and assignments, as needed
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Strong organizational skills with demonstrated experience in coordinating and implementing special events for students.

  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with students, faculty, staff and the public.

  • Special sensitivity to concerns of students of diverse, low-income and first-generation backgrounds.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of advising models & strategies, and student success and retention initiatives

Required Qualification Summary
  • Currently enrolled in a graduate degree program in education, counseling, student personnel, social work, or a related field.

  • Prior experience advising or working with a youth, preferably in higher education

  • Special sensitivity to concerns of students of diverse, low-income and first-generation backgrounds.

  • Must be available to work an average of 15-20 hours per week (with some evening or weekend hours).
