Jewish Community Center Group Leader, Summer Youth Employment Program in New York, New York

Principal Responsibilities:

Summer Youth Employment Program for Younger Youth****

The NYC Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) is the nation's largest youth employment program, connecting New York City youth between the ages of 14 - 21 with career exploration opportunities and paid work experience each summer. SYEP Younger Youth Program is designed to prepare 14 & 15-year-olds for the workforce through project-based learning strategies and workshops that will develop their professional skills, and prepare them to become successful working adults.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Group leaders are responsible for academic tutoring and assisting lead instructors in preparing students to demonstrate newly acquired skills in culinary arts, food business and health and wellness.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Organize, lead, and promote the students' interest and participation in the activities offered by the program
  • Foster an atmosphere of fun and learning, and serve as a role model to students, always professionally conducting yourself and maintaining appropriate boundaries
  • Establish and enforce rules for behavior, and procedures for maintaining order among the students
  • Provide academic support, homework guidance, assistance, and supervision to students
  • Promote positive character development
  • Maintain effective classroom management that encourages full participation and student growth
  • Supervise groups of students while maintaining their physical and emotional safety and health
  • Closely coordinate with Program Director and coworkers for any programmatic changes or any other issues or concerns
  • Participate in staff meetings, program evaluations, program improvement, and professional development sessions throughout the school year.
  • Provide other program support as needed.

POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

  • Part-time position
  • Monday - Wednesday (5 1/2 hours each day)

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Work is performed in a typical community center and school environment.

Minimum Qualifications:

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma and must be at least 18 years old
  • Experience working with youth in a classroom, afterschool, or community-based environment

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES**

  • Strong academic skills and knowledge of New York state standards and test preparation.
  • Genuine interest in working with culturally diverse 6th-8th Grade students, and able to promote positive character development.
  • Sincere desire to effect positive social and academic change in the lives of NYC youth.
  • Well-organized, reliable and punctual.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Can work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Comfortable to learn and model universal Jewish values while working in and with a large, diverse population.

TRAVEL

  • Able to travel to various sites in upper Manhattan

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • College Degree
  • Bachelor's or Associate Degree in progress
  • Experience as a Group Leader using a positive youth development model

WORK AUTHORIZATION & CLEARANCE**

  • Documentation of U.S. citizenship or eligibility to work in the U.S.
  • Must pass the background check, medical exams, fingerprinting and other requirements of the Department of Health (DOH), Department of Education (DOE), and Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD).
