International Arbitration Fellowship
Squire Patton Boggs (SPB) has announced the launch of its International Arbitration Fellowship, a nine-week paid position offered to a qualified student currently attending a U.S. law school. During the Fellowship, the International Arbitration Fellow will work alongside partners and associates in our globally-ranked International Dispute Resolution (IDR) practice group on many of the world’s largest international arbitration cases.
SPB is one of the largest law firms in the world. With 1,600 lawyers in 44 offices across 19 countries, we represent nearly one third of all the Fortune 500 and FTSE 350 companies.
Our IDR group is made up of 135 lawyers spread out over 24 offices. Lawyers in our IDR group are currently counsel in approximately 100 international arbitrations, worth USD 23.6 billion in claims.
The IDR practice at SPB includes both a commercial arbitration practice and an investment treaty arbitration practice. Our commercial international arbitration practice focuses on energy, construction, and corporate disputes. Our investment treaty arbitration practice focuses on the representation of sovereign nations and foreign investors before international tribunals. We currently represent, or have represented in recent years, 10 different sovereign nations – Costa Rica, Ecuador, Spain, Croatia, Kosovo, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Gabon, and Turkmenistan – in investment treaty matters.
This is a nine-week summer program, during which the International Arbitration Fellow will spend approximately half of the summer in one of the firm’s US offices, such as New York, Washington DC, Miami, or Cleveland. The other half of the summer will be spent inone of the firms international offices, such as London, Paris, Dubai, or Singapore.
The International Arbitration Fellow will have the opportunity to gain valuable, broad-ranging, and intensive IDR experience. The Fellow will develop skills that will make them attractive for long-term employment within the rapidly-growing international arbitration field in one of the most dynamic times in the industry’s history. Responsibilities will include legal research and drafting and will involve significant daily interaction with other team members to understand all aspects of the cases to which the Fellow is assigned.
This Fellowship may lead to an offer of further employment.
Academic and Professional Qualifications
Current 2L student at an ABA-approved law school.
Record of outstanding academic achievement; preference given to the top 25% of class or GPA of 3.5 and above.
Demonstrated interest in international arbitration.
Genuine interest in working abroad at an international law firm.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
Excellent communication skills (written and oral) are essential.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with others.
Ability to complete assigned tasks with attention to detail; work with colleagues under pressure; and meet deadlines.
English language skills are required. Additional language skills are preferred.
