Position Summary

Columbia Technology Ventures is the technology transfer office for Columbia University and a central location for many of the technology development initiatives, entrepreneurial activities, external industry collaborations, and commercially-oriented multidisciplinary technology innovations across the university. CTV’s core mission is to facilitate the transfer of inventions from academic research labs to the market for the benefit of society on a local, national, and global basis. Each year, CTV manages more than 350 invention disclosures, 100 license deals, and 20 new IP-backed start-ups, involving over 750 inventors across Columbia's campuses. CTV currently has over 1200 patent assets available for licensing, across research fields such as bio, IT, clean tech, devices, big data, nanotechnology, materials science, and more.

Over the years, CTV has been involved with launching well over 200 companies based on Columbia's technologies, and has also founded several technology initiatives to accelerate the path to market for promising technologies, including the Hudson Heights Innovation ( Collaboration, the Columbia-NYU-Takeda alliance ( and the Columbia Biomedical Technology Accelerator. ( CTV has also worked closely with Industry partnerships to develop collaborations and funding programs for translational research in the life sciences.

CTV’s efforts are backed by 50+ full time staff and an additional 35+ graduate student interns (CTV Fellows ( ), providing broad support to the Columbia community and other stakeholders. CTV also runs an Executive-in-Residence program ( , which brings seasoned industry executives, serial entrepreneurs, and investors to campus to support faculty and student entrepreneurial activities.

The Business Development Manager will report to the Assoc. Director for Business Development & Portfolio management and will support CTV’s Licensing Team on commercializing highest-impact technologies, growing relationships with prospective licensees, identifying and developing new academic-industry research alliances and overall portfolio management. Specifically, the Business Development Manager will work closely with the Assoc. Director for BD to manage and support the growing portfolio of life science focused industry alliances as well as develop and manage strategic relationships with industry and investors.

  • Work closely with the Assoc. Director of BD to support existing industry alliances and establish new alliances through sourcing of new partnerships

  • Serve as primary point of contact for investigators and industry sponsor for select life science accelerators throughout the pre- and post-award process

  • Develop requests-for-proposals (RFP) in collaboration with industry sponsors and Columbia’s Lab-to-Market Accelerator Network for two accelerator programs.

  • Lead RFP marketing efforts and outreach to investigators in sector areas relevant to the life science accelerator programs

  • Oversee proposal submissions and review from accelerator partners

  • Ensure all obligations outlined in the agreement are met at the project and alliance levels

  • Work closely with the CTV’s licensing and patent/legal teams to determine project eligibility and ensure contractual obligations are met

  • Ensure effective communication between JSC and research project teams, oversee timely submission of deliverables to the industry sponsor, and coordinate and lead research project meetings

  • Manage confidential information exchange, intellectual property identification, disclosures and publication review

  • Work closely with Assoc Director for BD and Finance teams to manage budget and allocation of resources

  • Support strategies for faculty outreach and engagement for both the Morningside and CUIMC campuses

  • Partner with the CTV Licensing team with marketing and strategy development of highest-impact technologies

  • Source technologies for industry and investors

  • Serve as point of contact for industry and investors

  • Draft startup communications and investor outreach

  • Support portfolio management activities

  • Collaborate with the Industry Relations Director on initiatives to diversify financial support for research at Columbia

Minimum Qualifications

  • Three years of related experience. PhD, JD, MBA or other graduate degree preferred.

  • The most important criteria for this job are an extraordinary ability to multi-task effectively and efficiently, and to track projects over time at varying degrees of detail. Accordingly, candidate must have outstanding organizational skills and be extremely detail-oriented in a high-volume dynamic environment.

  • Experience at working both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment is essential.

  • The candidate must be able to conform to shifting priorities, demands and timelines through analytical and problem-solving capabilities, and react to project adjustments and alterations promptly and efficiently.

  • The candidate must be able to interact in oral and written form with a wide variety of stakeholders, including faculty, industry representatives, external consultants, and Columbia’s project administrators

Preferred Qualifications

  • Science PhD, JD, MBA, or other graduate degree with 1-2 years of experience preferred.
