Autism Speaks Manager, Communications and Public Relations in New York, New York
We are seeking a Manager of Communications and Public Relations! Individual will be home based in the NY Metro Area (New York City and surrounding counties of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania). However, w e are open and flexible to candidates in other locations as well.
POSITION: Autism Speaks is seeking a Manager, Communications who will work closely with communications, marketing and field staff to facilitate public relations and external/internal communications efforts, content and asset development and writing. S/he will assist with pitching, booking and logistics for national and local media opportunities, tracking/reporting media coverage and metrics, field communications, email campaign and event support. This position will work closely with field staff nationwide and serve as a key liaison for internal departments and external partners, ensuring consistency of messaging and identifying opportunities to tell the Autism Speaks story to a broad audience.
Coordinate with internal team members and public relations agency to pitch and secure national and local media coverage of Autism Speaks’ mission and impact
Write media alerts, pitches and press releases for Autism Speaks news, including, but not limited to, partnerships, initiatives and events
Coordinate as needed with external partners on press releases and other written materials
Write and edit email, PR and collateral content in support of field priorities
Manage internal approval processes for all field email and written materials
Work with the field to develop a repository of stories for use organization-wide
Support in execution of PR efforts, in partnership with PR agency, for Autism Speaks initiatives, including special events, partnerships and ongoing “news bureau” media relations
Research and facilitate outreach opportunities for Autism Speaks
Work closely with other departments in securing real stories from the community for pitching opportunities
Directly engage in pitching and securing national and significant local media opportunities
Build and manage media lists; develop strong working relationships with new and existing contacts, particularly in print and digital media
Assist in researching and securing celebrity/influencer engagement for special events and campaigns
Coordinate photography during special events and provide photo direction to local field teams
Monitor media coverage in partnership with PR agency; create and distribute weekly and monthly internal metrics reports
Assist with ongoing media training for staff to ensure consistent messaging
Assist with updating and disseminating PR materials to support other departments in messaging
Serve as a liaison and support to the field for communications needs assuring alignment and maximizing opportunity
Assist and advise field staff on media opportunities, sponsorships and media lists
Support local PR volunteers, defining processes and best practices
Coordinate with Autism Speaks internal departments to identify opportunities to collaborate and storytelling opportunities internally and externally
Assist with disseminating internal communications
Develop strong relationships with field staff nationwide and support with communications guidance

Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism or related field
Minimum of 5 years of professional experience
Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills
Strong national media relationships
Track record of placements in local and/or national media outlets
Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines
Excellent proficiency in Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
Knowledge of a media monitoring and distribution system
Availability for occasional travel and night or weekend assignments
