Summary

The New York Campus of the VA New Harbor Healthcare System has immediate opportunities available in this state-of-the-art facility. We are currently seeking Physician Assistants to join our Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) Team, an integral part of the healthcare team. The incumbent will be working closely with surgeons and other services coordinating continuity of patient care in the Surgical ICU. The PA will provide care within a defined scope of practice.

Responsibilities

The Physician Assistant is a certified health care professional who performs patient care services on patients in the SICU under the supervision of the Director of the SICU. The ideal candidate will perform history and physical examinations, including blood drawing and other diagnostic elements of initial evaluation. He/she will order indicated laboratory, imaging and other diagnostic studies, initiate consultations and coordinate services. The PA will perform arterial puncture for blood gases and insert and remove nasogastric, rectal and urinary catheters. VA Harbor is seeking a qualified BC/BE individual from an accredited PA program.

  • Performing initial histories and physical examinations on inpatients and outpatients.
  • The supervising physician will review and countersign all admitting inpatient history and physical examinations.
  • Providing effective care to patients characterized by the use of sound judgment in assessing, planning, implementing documenting and evaluating patient care for assigned patients.
  • Performing periodic physical examinations on nursing home and domiciliary residents.
  • Screening outpatients to determine need for further care.
  • Ordering diagnostic studies such as laboratory tests, x-rays, or electrocardiograms (EKGs).
  • Carrying out health promotion and disease prevention activities.
  • Drawing blood specimens for testing and performing other comparable laboratory procedures.

Work Schedule: Full Time(Compressed tours (generally 3 shifts per week comprised of 13 and 14 hour shifts) with rotating nights and weekends. Some flexibility is available in tour, however, the incumbent will be required to rotate through tours to meet patient care needs around the clock.

Additionally, this position may be eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP). Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Education. The candidate must meet the following: Graduate of a PA training program, or of a surgical assistant program which is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor organizations; and

(a) A Bachelor's degree from an accredited PA training program or in another health sciences related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. OR (a) 1 year of professional practice as a PA; or (b) Successful completion of a PA post-graduate residency program accredited by ARC-PA or by the U.S. Armed Forces; or (c) A Master's degree from a PA training program certified by ARC-PA or in another health-related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

Certification (1) Current and continuous certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is required for employment in VHA.

(2) Recent PA graduates who are eligible to take the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE) may be employed by VA on a temporary basis (38 U.S.C. 7405), for a period not to exceed two years, as provided in VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, Section G, Paragraph 5.

(3) If a PA's NCCPA certification is suspended, revoked or expires, the PA must be removed from the occupation which may result in termination of employment.

Grade Determinations: Experience as a PA will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Physician Assistant Personnel. The criteria are as follows: Practice: Practice, Ethics and Resource Utilization; Professional Development: Performance, Education/Career Development; Collaboration; Collaboration, Collegiality; Scientific Inquiry: Quality of Care, Research.

Full Grade: Basic qualifications of citizenship, education, certification, and English language proficiency; along with the ability to demonstrate Clinical Competencies (Clinical Proficiency, Professional Development, Ethics, Interpersonal Skills, and Research.

Intermediate Grade: Experience/Education:1 year of professional practice as a PA; or Successful completion of a PA post-graduate residency program accredited by ARC-PA or by the US Armed Forces; or A Master's degree from a PA training program certified by ARC-PA or in another health-related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the US Department of ED and meet the Clinical Competencies (Clinical Proficiency, Professional Development, Ethics, Interpersonal Skills, Research).
