Gordon Institute of Minority Education at Teachers College, Columbia University has the Raising Educational Achievement Coalition of Harlem (REACH), which is a demonstration project of a university–assisted schools model that seeks to improve students’ educational outcomes through a set of coherent and strategic actions that increases access to comprehensive educational opportunity to better support their academic achievements.

Job Summary/Basic Function:

We are seeking a Success Coordinator to work with chronically absent youth to address the barriers keeping them from attending school on a daily basis and to help them reach their educational outcomes.

Under the supervision of the Community School Director, the Success Coordinator will work with chronically absent youth to address the barriers keeping them from attending school on a daily basis and to help them reach their educational outcomes.

The incumbent will help to identify the causes of poor attendance and work with the REACH team and Department of Education (DOE) staff to seek solutions. The Success Coordinator will also be responsible for organizing events that promote a school-wide attendance culture of “Every Student Every Day”.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

Program Development, Implementation & Coordination (75%)

  • Work closely with chronically absent students and their families for a full year.

  • Meet and greet students each morning/afternoon when they arrive at school.

  • Make early morning phone calls to absent students.

  • Track attendance and celebrate improvements.

  • Meet with chronically absent students regularly to check in on how school is going and listen to youth’s needs.

  • Work with REACH team and school leadership to identify appropriate interventions to support and engage students.

  • Seek advice and identify targeted sources of youth or family support from appropriate school staff and community-based partners under the direction of the Community School Director.

  • Keep notes about youth attendance patterns, needs and interventions- ensuring monitoring of data is strategic.

  • Participate in attendance meetings to share any best practices, challenges and updates regarding students’ progress.

  • Mobilizes families to engage in the REACH’s family engagement program.

  • Communicate regularly with the Community School Director or other designated personnel regarding needs and supplies to support youth.

  • Support school culture and climate, develop and implement incentive program and event planning.

  • Support the REACH Community School Director, Family Engagement Coordinator, principal and parent coordinator to establish a family engagement work plan for the partner school that includes a focus on incorporating activities that build on the ELO activities and complements the school’s family engagement and SEL activities.

Support programmatic coherence across REACH team and partners (10%)

  • Provide support to REACH team members (Family Engagement Coordinator, and Instructional Specialist) to ensure programming across the REACH model is coherent and based on the academic needs of the schools and students.

  • Provide support for ELO academic programming (e.g., tutoring, summer programming, Saturday academy) and/or training of graduate students.

  • Participate in and support school retreats where school teams will examine case studies and develop school improvement plans; support the schools in developing academic goals and action plans from their work at retreat.

Administration & Communication (10%)

  • Supports development of content for the bi-monthly REACH newsletter & calendar of events for students and families.

  • Cultivates and maintains high levels of trust and communication with community-based, cultural & faith-based organizations that serve children and families as well as the NYC DOE Division of Family and Community Engagement.

  • Communicate regularly with parent coordinators and other school-based parent leadership to coordinate implementation of REACH family engagement activities and support school-based activities.

  • Support and attend key student and family engagement events at school activities.

Other duties as assigned (5%)

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in the fields of Social Services, Psychology, Education or related field required

  • At least 2 years of experience working with elementary aged and adolescent’s groups.

  • Must demonstrate the interpersonal skills necessary to effectively interact with designated staff, DOE professionals, scholars, and their families during periods of emotional stress.

  • Must have experience in culturally responsive and social emotional learning practices with diverse populations.

  • Strong commitment and motivation to assist in achieving goals centered around Core Values.

  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Google Suite

  • Strong interpersonal, diplomacy, communication and listening skills

  • Strong organization and prioritization skills

  • Detail oriented

  • Demonstrate integrity and ethical practices

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual professionals

  • Bachelor degree

  • Must be able to adapt to an extremely dynamic work environment as priorities change throughout the academic year
