Recreation Specialist

Homes for the Homeless is actively seeking a Recreation Specialist for our families with children facility located on the west side of Manhattan. The Recreation Specialist will maintain and support the administrative operations of the Afterschool and Recreation Program, including our summer camp program. The Recreation Specialist will build and maintain relationships with staff members, stakeholders, parents, guardians, and participants by responding to questions and concerns, and engage in effective communication of policies and procedures related to the program. The Recreation Specialist will also support the Director of Afterschool & Recreation to ensure efficient operation of all aspects of programming, quality assurance, and reporting.

We are seeking an experienced, dedicated, and creative recreation staff member for our after-school program.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Ensure the safety and engagement of children in assigned activities

  • Assist in all activities to ensure the orderly operation of the program

  • Ability to design, plan and lead special project

  • Serve as a positive role model

  • Complete all assigned projects and tasks on time

  • Assist with events, fairs, holiday parties and activities, plays, etc.

  • Assist in other areas as needed

    Requirements:

  • Associates degree in: Child Development, Elementary Education, Physical Education, Recreation or a related field OR;

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; some college preferred AND Two years direct experience working with children under 13 years of age

  • Experience leading activities working with children

  • Competency in youth development and child care

  • Group management, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills

  • Ability to lead academic and/or enrichment activities that are age-appropriate

  • Ability to work as part of a team

  • Ability to communicate and work effectively and respectfully with a broad range of diverse constituents.
