The Salvation Army Regional Music Leader (DHQ) in New York, New York

Overview

Representing The Salvation Army’s spiritual & musical ministry in all spheres of influence within the Greater New York Division, this position will assist the Divisional Music & Creative Arts Director in the development of the music and creative arts programs in the corps, and the overall Divisional music and creative arts ministry.

Breakdown of time:

Corps instruction/teaching, leadership development and preparation – 70%

Divisional groups & special events – 15%

Star Lake Camp summer ministry – 15%

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the musical development (instrumental, vocal, music theory) of the corps within the Division

  • Evaluate and document the strengths and weaknesses of the music program in each corps to determine the musical aptitude of the participants, as well as the current corps music program, and as a result develop a teaching plan to strengthen the music skills of the participants within the corps to benefit the larger corps program

  • Assist the Music & Creative Arts Department in developing a teaching schedule based on the musical needs of the various corps within the Division

  • Supply the corps within the Division with musical equipment, resources, and materials such as instruments, music, theory materials and other necessary music equipment that will help both employees and local music leaders to carry out a music program within the Corps setting

  • Develop leaders within the Corps by teaching them how to conduct music groups, rehearse music groups, organize a music program, teach individual and group music lessons, instruct participants of all ages, prepare for performances, and how to mentor those participating in their program

  • Help to secure local volunteers to teach and enhance the musical ministry and program of the Corps in the Division

  • Assist Corps within the Division with music lessons as assigned

  • Promote and plan music events in at the Corps level. This includes helping local leaders plan programs, advertise these programs, and implement events.

  • Assist with the Music & Creative Arts Camp, Junior & Senior Conservatories, Star Search, Territorial Music Camp, and any Divisional Events as assigned

  • Assist as assigned with any Divisional music groups, as assigned by the Divisional Music & Creative Arts Director

  • Assist in the maintenance of the Divisional Music Library and managing music instrument resources

  • Work diligently in all areas of the corps ministry to enhance both the musical and spiritual growth of the participants within the music programs

  • Work to establish a vibrant Divisional music ministry that allows individuals to use their gifts and talents to the fullest as they serve God

  • Assist with any other projects and responsibilities as assigned by the Divisional Music & Creative Arts Director

  • All other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in the field of Music and/or relevant experience leading music programs in The Salvation Army

  • Active uniformed Salvationist in good standing, who is willing to soldier at a Corps in the Greater New York Division, appointed and approved by the Divisional Commander

  • Must have or obtain a valid driver’s license and be able to obtain access to a vehicle for travel around the Greater New York Division

  • Must be able to work well independently and have good organizational skills

  • Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
