The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.Position SummaryThe research staff assistant will be responsible for managing some day-to-day operation of the laboratory , equipping the laboratory for molecular biology research and protein preparations, optimizing protein expression and purification, and preparing large scale protein for NMR analysis.ResponsibilitiesThe research staff assistant will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operation of the laboratory and equipping the laboratory for molecular biology research. These duties include:- Administrative: - Ordering supplies for the laboratory; - Interacting with sales representatives from the various companies that distribute supplies/equipment to the laboratory; - Performing and/or scheduling routine, as well as any urgent, maintenance on laboratory equipment; - General IT tech duties such as maintaining backup of lab data and protocols on lab server and up-to-date maintenance of the lab website; - Coordinating with the PI and group members to schedule lab meetings- Research Support - Making solutions, media and protein reagents for molecular biology or protein preparation work; - Oversight of the lab strain collection; - Maintaining stringent protocols for glassware washing/drying for work with proteins and RNA; - Optimizing protein expression and purification - Preparing scaled up protein with isotopes for NMR analysis - The position may also include the possibility of working closely with a senior student or postdoc in the laboratory on a research project of mutual interest to the research assistant and the P.I.- Other duties as assignedMinimum QualificationsBachelor's Degree Required in a Scientific disciplineMinimum 1 year part time and 2 summers full time experience in a research setting carrying out similar experiments or studies, excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.Preferred QualificationsExperience in the areas of molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics, and/or fluorescence microscopy, with preference given to applicants with experience working with ribosomes and/or RNA and/or using fluorescence microscopy.Equal Opportunity Employer / Disability / Veteran Columbia University is committed to the hiring of qualified local residents.
