Position Summary
The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory campus of Columbia University seeks a Research Staff Assistant to provide support to the Research Professor in the Biology and Paleo Environment department. Under the close guidance and supervision of the Professor serving as the PI, the Research Staff Assistant (RSA) will provide support to the Arctic Long Term Ecological Research (ARC LTER) site. The ARC LTER is part of a network of sites established by the National Science Foundation that sustains the long-term ecological research in the United States. Field work may include collecting soil samples and clipping and gathering leaf samples. The Research Staff Assistant will be responsible for the use and upkeep of laboratory equipment and field instruments. Work collaboratively with summer students, undergraduate assistants, and work-study students in the laboratory and out in the field.
Responsibilities
Assist with laboratory and field work associated with the Arctic Long Term Ecological Research site (ARC LTER).
Data organization, archiving, review and summary.
Web page development and maintenance.
Tracking of laboratory expenses by monitoring invoices and expense records.
The Research Staff Assistant will receive close guidance and supervision from the Professor serving as the PI. The RSA will exercise independent judgement and initiative within specific objectives set by the PI.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in ecology or related scientific discipline and a minimum of six (6) months of experience in a research environment are required.
Ability to work under challenging field conditions (in Artic Alaska).
Fieldwork in Alaska will take place during the summer and can last up to three (3) months.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with field research and use of scientific instrumentation preferred.
