Volunteers of America, Inc. (VOA, Inc.) is a national, faith-based human services organization that was founded in New York City in 1896 and has remained at the forefront of social service ever since, helping individuals and families in need overcome obstacles to living safe, healthy and productive lives in the community. VOA-GNY’s life-changing, often life-saving work impacts the lives of individuals and families who are homeless and those at risk of homelessness, families recovering from domestic violence, children with developmental delays, individuals living with HIV/AIDS or behavioral health issues, older adults and veterans struggling to reintegrate. VOA, Inc. is one of the largest providers of permanent, supportive housing in the United States. VOA-GNY is the largest provider of supportive housing for veterans in New York, and is committed to addressing the needs of the community with compassion, creativity, respect, and therapeutic models that inform our work.

The Senior Communications Associate is an important member of a busy, deadline-driven team responsible for the organization’s internal and external communications and community engagement activities. The Communications team prepares and distributes digital and traditional marketing assets, provides corporate engagement opportunities, promotes and executes the organization’s signature community service campaign Operation Backpack®, plans special events, and ensures employees at Volunteers of America-Greater New York’s 80 programs are informed, knowledgeable ambassadors of the organization. In short – the Communications team tells the story of Volunteers of America-Greater New York, its community, and its clients.

This candidate must have a sincere desire to work in nonprofit, and in particular, social services. He/she is responsible for managing the organization’s website and social media presence, ensuring that all platforms are continuously updated with compelling, on-brand and error-free content. With a thorough understanding of emerging trends, industry best practices and web analytics, this candidate must determine the best measures of success, report and adjust strategy accordingly. Overseeing all things digital, he/she will help maintain the organization’s logo, photo, and marketing asset library on Box.com. An excellent writer and editor, this candidate actively and eagerly collaborates on a number of annual projects, marketing e-blasts, campaigns, and events, as well as ongoing tasks and one-off projects. Along with the entire Communications team, he/she lends support to special events including the signature community service campaign Operation Backpack® and the annual gala.

Experience and Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a communications-related major with five years’ relevant experience and a sincere desire to work in the social services field, or satisfactory combination of education and experience, preferably in a nonprofit, social services setting.

  • Prior responsibility managing a website CMS; experience researching, organizing, and presenting information to leadership, specifically social media growth and Google Analytics.

  • Demonstrated facility with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and other social media, and a history of significantly growing engagement.

  • Strong written and verbal communications skills; verifiable experience writing copy that is error-free, accurate content-wise, and reflects the appropriate brand voice. Ability to work independently and draft messaging that requires little editing. Provide writing samples, preferably e-newsletter samples.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to interact agreeably and productively with staff from a variety of service programs.

  • Highly organized, efficient, detail-oriented, able to manage and prioritize multiple assignments, always delivering products on time.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office – ability to use Excel for reporting, experience creating attractive PowerPoint presentations. Significant experience using Constant Contact, MailChimp or similar e-marketing tool. Adobe InDesign and Photoshop experience desired. Video editing experience desired.

Principle Responsibilities of the Senior Communications Associate: 1. Manage organization’s website, ensuring it is functioning optimally and content is always current, accurate, compelling and addresses the needs of internal and external users. Research peers’ sites and industry best practices, recommend and implement enhancements and run analytics routinely, presenting relevant data to leadership in clear terms. Collaborate with Development and Communications staff to the strengthen website’s role in donor cultivation.

  1. Manage and significantly build social media presence on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube Instagram, and LinkedIn, following emerging trends, applying industry best practices and introducing other appropriate social platforms. Independently craft posts that reflect approved messaging and voice, and require little editing; deliver consistently on time. Determine best measures of engagement, diving deeper than simply measuring “followers,” to determine impact and inform strategy; measure and report.

  2. Liaise with external vendors including Google Ad Grant management team to ensure that Google Ads are relevant and driving users to appropriate web pages, and that copy is error-free and on-brand. Liaise with print, out-of-home and digital advertisers to provide ads on time, to spec. Obtain received media reports that quantify number of spots, impressions and in-kind value of donation.

  3. Develop relationships with program staff to facilitate the sharing of stories about our work. On occasion, attend program events to take high-quality photos, shoot video on phone, support event-related needs, and gather stories of success about the organization’s clients, staff and volunteers. Assist in producing e-newsletters, e-blasts and other digital communications including simple videos to share on social media.

  4. Organize and maintain digital filing system to ensure photo releases, photography, logos, all graphic resources, and print collateral are organized and easily accessed by internal users on Box.com.

  5. Working closely with Communications team, promote large-scale events on all relevant communications channels, updating information as it changes; assist with event logistics pre-, day-of, and post-event; prepare PowerPoint presentations, event recaps, and upload photo slideshows to website on a timely basis; during Gala season in November/December and Operation Backpack® in the summer, work longer hours as needed in order to get the job done.

  6. Other duties as assigned.
