Lightbend Senior Product Manager, Cloud in New York, New York

Senior Product Manager, Cloud

Lightbend is looking for a seasoned, professional Product Manager to take ownership of and drive forward product strategy and investments in everything related to its Kalix cloud service product line. We are looking for someone passionate about developer-focused products, improving how software is built, and interested in driving forward a vision for cloud services that goes way beyond anything currently on the market.

Cloud-native infrastructure holds the promise of supporting scalable, high-performance microservices and APIs, but many complexity challenges remain in building out the applications themselves. Historically, building large-scale, real-time distributed systems has meant using a sophisticated, complicated architecture and an array of various and often expensive technologies, such as enterprise application infrastructure software, distributed databases, caches, etc. Equally importantly, finding both the engineering and DevOps skills to build and run these applications successfully has become an ongoing nightmare for even the most well-funded of teams.

Kalix is a Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) designed specifically to address these challenges.

  • You will define the roadmap and drive the market success of Kalix. From ideation to initiative and requirements definition to project execution to launch, you will be the driving force, strategically and tactically.

  • You will manage the product backlog, including creating and prioritizing the list of backlog items to support the overall strategy and business objectives, within the constraints of technical dependencies.

  • You will advocate for our users, the developers out there in the community and at our customers. You will constantly strive to ensure that their voices and perspectives are heard, both in the Kalix Developer Experience and also throughout Lightbend.

  • You will work with our Engineering team(s) to execute on the vision, both yours and the companyʼs. Weʼre here to be wildly successful and youʼll have a huge part in making this happen.

  • You will communicate regularly with stakeholders across the board, including customers, partners, Engineering, Operations, Sales, Marketing and Business Development to make sure the goals are clear and the vision is aligned with business objectives.

  • You will identify key partners that may be required to ensure the success of Kalix and work with relevant Lightbend executives and teams to deliver on that value.

  • You will help the Lightbend PM team evolve and improve. Everyone brings their own experiences and talents, and learnings to the table. We want to learn as much as teach. The team is small, and the processes are new. Helping to build teams and make teams great are two awesome things to put on your resume.

  • Like any great PM, you know how to communicate: from making sure Engineering understands the whatʼs and whys of features to laying out the product vision to eager stakeholders to interacting with customers.

  • You code! Or like to think that you could! Weʼre a developer platform. Not that youʼll be coding for real but if youʼre not feeling the itch to build something, then youʼre probably not feeling the Lightbend and Kalix love. We wonʼt check out your GitHub account but you probably have one.

  • You have your finger on the pulse of developers. From being an expert on the latest and greatest tech out there for API documentation to being able to argue the pros and cons of GraphQL versus Protobuf to being able to connect to both the hobbyist and the enterprise developer, your grasp of the developer community will both inform your roadmap but also influence the overall company and product strategy.

  • Youʼre a proven PM. Youʼve been doing this for some time. 5 years, at minimum. Quality of experience is as important, though: great talent we want but seasoned enough to step into a role with direct control over major parts of our globally distributed and highly scalable product.

  • You possess a high capacity for empathy. How else are you going to connect to your customers? You can get immersed in the problem space and imagine solutions and work with engineering to perfect those ideas (or come up with even better ones).

  • You love seeing your features and product in action. Execution is almost pathological in your nature. It doesnʼt mean that youʼre reckless but that you have a constant need to move the proverbial ball forwards. If you love getting stuff done, Lightbend Product Management is the place to be!

  • You have substantial experience with lean and agile teams.

  • You have experience in the development and release of a Cloud-based hosted product and an understanding of the unique needs of Cloud-based products and platforms.

  • You have a proven ability to lead teams across dispersed organisations and geographical locations successfully.

Frequently cited statistics show that women and underrepresented groups apply to jobs only if they meet 100% of the qualifications. Lightbend encourages you to break that statistic and to apply. No one ever meets 100% of the qualifications. We look forward to your application.

The ideal candidate will be based in the eastern half of the United States or in Western Europe, although anywhere in North America and Europe will be considered.
