Datadog, Inc Senior Software Engineer - Workspaces in New York, New York

About Datadog:

We're on a mission to build the best platform in the world for engineers to understand and scale their systems, applications, and teams. We operate at high scale-trillions of data points per day-allowing for seamless collaboration and problem-solving among Dev, Ops and Security teams globally for tens of thousands of companies. Our engineering culture values pragmatism, honesty, and simplicity to solve hard problems the right way.

The Team:

The Workspaces team is responsible for all aspects of development environments. Our goal is to ensure our developers can get running with minimal manual setup, knowing that they are safe in the face of system upgrades or architecture changes. Some of our projects include remote development, self-service Kubernetes environments, and tight feedback loops for integration.

The Opportunity:

How many times have you joined a new team, excited and ready to go, just to find it's going to take several days to get your laptop set up? Or maybe you finally got it working, but spilled something / dropped your laptop / had it stolen from a coffee shop and it took a week to get going again, but it still didn't feel "just quite right"? Or perhaps you're trying to contribute to a new codebase which prompts you to "brew install ", and that something pulls in an openssl upgrade, and that openssl upgrade breaks something completely unrelated?

Those are the problems you'll be solving as a senior software engineer on the Workspaces team. Our work directly targets the day to day issues developers face at Datadog, from the minor papercuts (managing multiple toolchain versions) to the major systemic issues (platform architecture) and everything in between. One of our goals is to enable folks to onboard to a codebase with a few button clicks, giving them a remote development environment with all the right tools at the right versions, and all the data and dependent systems they need already running, fully ready to be connected to via their editor of choice. If something goes wrong, they can just throw it away and create a new one. In short: freedom from platform, system, and configuration issues.

You Will:

Build first class support for remote development

Help leverage ephemeral environments for additional use cases

Work across our codebases to support engineering teams across Datadog

Help make decisions that reduce friction and make things "just work"

Identify common problems across disparate environments and find solutions for them

You Are:

A seasoned engineer with 5+ years of software development experience

Someone that has deep understanding of at least one of the following technologies and their ecosystems: Go, Python, Kubernetes

Someone that enjoys mentoring other engineers

Someone that enjoys working with other teams across the company

An engineer that likes to solve problems "close to the keyboard": our problems are often not solved by designing another system, but by talking to people and addressing their specific needs.

Bonus Points:

Experience with remote development (VSCode remote, IntelliJ, developing in Docker, editing over SSH)

Experience with developing against services running in Kubernetes (Tilt, Okteto, Telepresence)

\#LI-SM6

\#LI-Remote This is a remote position
