Police Athletic League Site Director in New York, New York

The Police Athletic League is the largest independent youth organization in New York City that provides educational and recreational activities for children and young adults. PAL Inc. and The New York City Police Department work in partnership to provide communities with summer and after-school recreational and educational activities.

We are looking for a Site Director who will be r esponsible for overseeing the daily operation of all services within the assigned The PAL Playstreet Site. Under the direction of Borough Coordinators plan, organize and manage services, staff, and volunteers and perform administrative duties that support and facilitate all the day-to-day Playstreets functions.

This position is available in the Bronx and Manhattan.

Major Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for all enrollment and retention endeavors.

  • Hold staff accountable for program goals and expectations

  • Offer counsel and redirection in an effort to strengthen staff activity facilitation.

  • Establish and maintain rapport with community stakeholders.

  • Establish and enforce safety rules and emergency procedures.

  • Ensure consistent participant engagement in accordance with the program schedule.

  • Model and uphold all agency policies & procedures.

  • Attend and participate in preseason training sessions.

  • Set up and take down program equipment at the site daily, on-time; dress in PAL-provided and approved attire (staff t-shirt, appropriate shorts/sweats, and athletic footwear).

  • Keep order on-site, recognizing daily attendance trends.

  • File accident/incident reports to Borough Coordinator.

  • Coordinate and assist in teaching youngsters PAL approved rules and regulations for tournament gameplay; and counsel youth in the areas of life skills, drug prevention, conflict resolution as needed.

  • Act as a mandated child abuse reporter, being aware of the signs of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse; report incidents/suspicions to Borough Coordinator.

  • Engage and interact with the neighborhood business owners, parents, senior citizens, etc., representing the program and PAL in a professional manner.

  • Develop clear communication and working relationships with NYPD officers as well as PAL partner organizations.

  • Advise youngsters and parents of site schedules, special events, and site policy and procedures.

  • Maintain all paperwork: registration materials, weekly attendance trackers, staff logbook and youth logbook, and payroll forms for submission to Borough Coordinator.

  • A PAL Site Director is a role model. Encourage youth to actively participate in all available activities, and that they receive respect and recognition and understand that advice/guidance is available from staff concerning problems onsite or offsite.

    Additional Responsibilities

  • File incident reports (accidents, injuries, altercations, etc.) no later than the day of the incident.

  • Submit weekly attendance reports and ensure that both Site staff & youth participant attendance logbooks are signed and well kept.

  • As assigned, maintain a program bulletin board announcing current and upcoming Site events and activities, hours of operation, staff on-site, emergency phone numbers, and displaying all PAL signage.

  • Sign daily attendance time-sheet and submit every week to Borough Coordinator for review and to the Borough Coordinator for signature.

  • Interact with parents and keep open lines of communication to enable you to better understand and manage their/our child(ren).

    Educations & Experience

  • A minimum of sixty credits towards a degree from an accredited college or university in recreation. Psychology, sociology, education, counseling, physical education, sports management/exercise science, or related field.

  • A minimum of two years of supervisory experience in a non-profit youth or social service agency.

    Skills/Knowledge Required

  • Previous experience as a basketball coach preferred.

  • Demonstrated skills and competency in youth service and recreation.

  • Understanding of conflict resolution, mediation, and mentoring concepts.

  • Good communication skills, both oral and written. Ability to speak professionally to staff members, parents, community residents, visitors, NYPD officers, and PAL partner organizations.

  • Familiarity with administrative protocols involving dress, demeanor, record keeping, reporting, confidentiality, visitors, use of supplies and equipment, and cell phone.

  • Ability to work in NYCHA locations.

  • Ability to lift and set up heavy equipment.
