Mattel Sr Director Public Relations (NYC) in New York, New York


This position will report directly to the Executive Vice President, Global Communications. The Public Relations Senior Director will be responsible for developing communications programming that drives demand creation/earned media for IPS, MEGA, Thomas, American Girl and construction brands.

In this role, the Sr. Director of Public Relations will have responsibility for developing and implementing strategic media and an external relations program that tells a compelling brand business story and meets the growing needs of the Company. The position will partner with the SVP & GM of Fisher-Price and Global head of IPS, the SVP & GM of American Girl, the SVP MEGA & Global head of construction, the VP of Digital and Social Media, as well as Government Affairs in developing and executing corporate and consumer communications plans.


Develop global brand communications strategies across American Girl, MEGA, Fisher-Price and Thomas brands. Work with SVP & VP of brands to develop communications programming and narratives/ messaging that amplifies the marketing plan to drive demand creation.

The role creates global consistent communication strategies to drive product awareness, elevate the brand, and ultimately impact sales, brand buzz, and brand sentiment.

Lead PR execution, work with various agencies on program execution, develop and maintain key relationships with media and influencers, and stay on the top of key trends to ensure we are executing an innovative marketing communications program, as well as driving awareness for our products.

Develop relationships with external media and influencers to influence positive press coverage for the brands/Company.

Works closely with corporate and brand communications to refine the global communication strategy into a tactical plan that supports the brands.

Oversee execution of pan brand initiatives including: visibility at tradeshows, toy and lifestyle influencer strategy, celebrity engagement, media relations around key selling seasons.

Work with executives and TSS to develop the messaging and visual execution for NYTY, LVLS, Comic Con, CES, etc.

Provide guidance on the best way to leverage influencers/celebrities to drive buzz and relevance or add credibility.


  • Ensure world-class PR and Brand communication for Fisher-Price and American Girl


Strategic thinkers who enjoy collaborative leadership and storytelling. Creative candidates who have 10 or more years of marketing communications experience from Fortune 500 companies and possess the following skills:

  • Media relations strategy – to effectively influence decision-makers to promote their brand, public relations directors understand how broadcast media and its various audiences work

  • Digital and social media marketing – utilize digital outlets, such as digital media, to stay on top of cutting-edge strategies for their brands

  • Spokesmanship– public relations directors strongly advocate on behalf of their company and brands across various media channels and vehicles

  • Communication skills – since successful PR campaigns rely on persuasive storytelling, strong speaking and writing skills are essential

  • Project management– simultaneously manage multiple publicity projects with tight deadlines

  • Interpersonal skills – easily create and maintain relationships with people and key stakeholders

  • Multi-tasking ability – work on multiple projects in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines, speed, flexibility, and adaptability under pressure


  • Undergraduate degree in Public Relations or Marketing is required. Advanced degree/MBA is highly desirable.
