The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York Staff Associate I in New York, New York

Columbia Business School is seeking a Staff Associate I for the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Office. All duties involve work in one or more of the following areas of social science research: psychology, sociology, economics, statistics, anthropology or related fields. The Staff Associate will conduct extensive literature reviews on issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion; collect, manage, and manipulate data using a variety of tools and sources, including but not limited to Stata and R; produce summary statistics and conduct basic statistical analyses; write scripts in python to automate processes and for webscraping; assist with data analysis and dissemination of findings through the preparation of reports, journal articles, presentations, web sites, and other research outlets.

Applicants are expected to have the following:

  • Familiarity with social science research and statistical analyses.
  • The ideal candidate will be self-motivated and be able to structure assignments and keep the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Office informed as necessary.
  • Strong time management skills and ability to balance multiple tasks and shifting priorities under tight deadlines at an accelerated pace when necessary.
  • Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and absolute commitment to task completion.
  • Strong written and verbal English skills are essential.
  • Evidence of outstanding academic achievement, along with prior high-quality academic writing.
  • Ability to read academic, subject-specific information and write a reasoned and thoughtful analysis, as well as produce a creative interpretation, is a plus.
  • Preference for a candidate who plans to seek an advanced degree and has a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in the Social Sciences, Engineering, Computer Science, Data or Information Science.
  • Up to four years of research experience in a research role as a research assistant during the academic year or a summer internship in a research lab or governmental institution.

Experience or Other Special Requirements

  • Programming experience in Python is preferred.
  • Familiarity with statistical tools such as linear regression is preferred.
  • Demonstrated exceptional written and oral communications skills needed - writing sample is required.
  • Candidate must be organized and able to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Up to four years of research experience in a research role as a research assistant during the academic year or a summer internship in a research lab

Preferred Qualifications

  • Major in social sciences, engineering, computer science, data or information science preferred.
  • Coursework in social sciences preferable.
  • Programming experience in one or more of the following languages: SAS, Matlab, Python, C , R, or SQL preferred.
