Educational Alliance, Inc. Staff Care and Development Manager in New York, New York

JOB PURPOSE

Reporting to the Associate Director of New Country Day Camp, a high-quality program that serves over 900+ campers, 600+ families, and 175+ seasonal staff every summer, the Staff Care and Development Manager will support all aspects of staff hiring and care. This is a client-facing role that requires a positive attitude and strong sense of motivational leadership, a deep level of emotional intelligence and the desire to create meaningful relationships with staff. This person must have a profound attention to detail, strong sense of initiative, as well as the willingness to be a member of a passionate, dedicated, close-knit team that values enthusiasm, creativity, kindness and hard work.

STAFF HIRING AND EMPLOYEE RELATIONS:

  • Direct client group: Seasonal camp staff of 175+

  • Serves as a liaison for Counselors in Training (CITs)

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

Pre-Camp Planning (Including Staff Hiring, Onboarding, and Logistics)

  • Support camp team’s efforts to build a robust employment brand with a strong values proposition to recruit experienced and values-aligned candidates

  • Work with Associate Director to manage the recruitment, hiring and training of 100 seasonal counselors

  • Conduct individual interviews with prospective candidates via zoom or in person and assess whether they are good candidates for hire.

  • Manage the hiring and interview process for CIT’s and attend/chaperone a full-day professional development event with the hired CITs in June.

  • Support Associate Directors who will oversee onboarding and compliance for 200 seasonal camp staff

  • Help coordinate all logistics for staff orientation including communication, travel, speakers and timing; be a thought partner in content development with leadership team and leads sessions as needed.

  • Design and execute systems to collect and evaluate staff feedback to ensure consistent quality of program, operations, communications and staff care; make recommendations for adjustments and new initiatives

At Camp (Including Employee-Relations, Communications, and Administrative Tasks)

  • Serve as the ambassador of welcome and primary point of contact to all 200 employees ranging from ages 14-40

  • Establish and implement strategies to increase staff morale, experience and annual retention

  • Be available on campgrounds throughout the camp day for questions from all NCDC staff, particularly CIT’s and Counselors as well as to provide support as needed. Proactively manage challenges that may arise.

  • Mediate and mitigate any inter-staff conflicts that may arise, according to the NCDC Restorative Justice Model.

  • Update and execute a system for collecting staff attendance to ensure that payroll is correct. Make coverage plans when necessary.

  • Send out all staff communications that contain reminders and important information as needed (ie; day before camp emails, end of session emails, etc.)

  • Work with camp leadership team to develop and liaise with staff support groups including but not limited to those who identify as BIPOC, LGBTQ+, etc.

  • Collaborate with Counselors in Training (CITs) and their direct supervisors to craft a unique work experience that maximizes skills development

  • Facilitate professional development opportunities for staff and CITs, including meetings and workshops

Leadership:

  • Always maintain and exhibit a role of leadership as a member of NCDC’s Key Staff

  • Be present at all days of orientation, camp and staff meetings during the camp season

  • Proactively problem solve and motivate colleagues as difficult moments present themselves throughout the camp season; encourage flexibility and understanding as means to achieve common goals

  • Establish and promote a commitment to the mission and vision of New Country Day Camp

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Required Knowledge

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience required

  • At least 2 years of related experience in a managerial role

  • Outstanding written and oral communications skills

  • Strong ability to interact with and relate to a diverse community

  • High level of emotional intelligence and empathy

  • Fast learner with ability to work independently and collaboratively

  • Ability and willingness to work in a high-pressure setting and juggle multiple projects at a time

  • Can begin part-time work in February and can attend all days of Staff Orientation and camp starting early June through August 16th
