Job Description:

Summer 2020 Software Engineering: Newsroom Tools Internship

The Newsroom Tools team is a dedicated team of engineers that builds custom editorial tools for world class newsrooms such as The Wall Street Journal.

Looking for a Software Engineer Intern to join our dynamic, high performing team over the summer. You should be proactive, love creating great products and borderline neurotic about code quality - employing best software development practices, documenting and unit testing your code. You should also have an open-source mentality, thinking about how to build projects as sets of reusable components that can be used by others.

Primary Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

  • Work under the close direction of tech lead(s) to develop software component(s) that will be used in our tools

  • Participate in collaborative decision-making to steer product direction

  • Able to work in a fast paced and agile environment, adhering to critical project timelines

  • Support Dow Jones technical cultural values and drive toward solutions independently, seeking feedback when appropriate

Knowledge/Experience Preferred:

  • Working towards a bachelor's degree in Technology, Computer Science, or a related field, with at least two years of school successfully completed.

  • Solid Javascript skills

  • Good understanding of RESTful API concepts and database technologies

  • Able to communicate effectively, implement feedback and raise issues/roadblocks as necessary

Preferred Tools/Skills:

  • React/Redux UI framework

  • Node.js/Express

  • Git and Github for version control

  • Proactive, excited to learn and build software with a passion for news and journalism
