Brennan Center for Justice Summer 2023 Communications Undergraduate Internship in New York, New York
The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law is a nonpartisan law and policy institute that seeks to improve the systems of democracy and justice in the United States. We work to hold our political institutions and laws accountable to the twin American ideals of democracy and equal justice for all. The Brennan Center’s work ranges from voting rights to campaign finance reform, from ending mass incarceration to preserving Constitutional protections in the fight against terrorism. Part think tank, part advocacy group, part cutting edge communications hub, we start with rigorous research. We craft innovative policies. And we fight for them – in Congress and the states, in the courts, and in the court of public opinion.
We are seeking interns to provide research / writing, administrative and clerical support to staff for our New York office in our communications department with our media, events, and creative teams.
Note: This internship will take place in person at our NY office.
Responsibilities: All interns will assist with general research and administrative work for the Brennan Center, including, coordinating meetings, and drafting routine correspondence. Additionally, there will be opportunities to attend and observe substantive meetings, events, and conversations on program work. In addition to administrative duties, specific responsibilities for each department include:
Media – tracking and organizing press coverage; managing our press database; creating press clips and tear-sheets; building and updating press lists; creating and editing event transcripts; and assisting with public and private events. For Brennan’s Spanish website, Brennan en Español, the work also entails writing social media messaging in both english and spanish and monitoring the site’s media metrics.
Digital – Participate in marketing, communications, and digital team meetings and strategy discussions; work with staff to create and post content on the website and social media including creative process coordination; work with staff on campaign marketing, promotion plans, and email production and testing; conduct research on social media and digital campaign trends and best practices; gather data and create reports on the effectiveness of ongoing online marketing campaigns; assist with digital advertising.
Creative - Produce motion graphics, animation and GIFs for digital channels; extensive image and archive research for video assignments; editing and producing video assets including intro and exit graphics, lower-thirds, color grading, sound design and exporting video; research on Brennan Center issues to develop engaging short-form video and motion graphics; support development of institutional, campaign and brand videos; including pitching and developing scripts, visual conception for motion graphics and or video narratives of editorial stories, campaigns and Brennan Center events; motion and still research, cataloging and organization of visual assets; maintaining multimedia archive: graphics, images and video.
Qualifications: The ideal candidates are independent self-starters; detail-oriented; energetic; punctual; and highly organized. Interns must also have excellent research, writing, and analytical skills, as well as a passion for our issues. Experience with Windows XP, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word a must. Database experience is very helpful. Applicant must be open to evolving responsibilities.

Hours: Approximately 40 hours per week
Pay: $15.00 per hour.
