TASK FORCE: City Revenues, Economics, and Policy

UNIT: Economic Analysis and Forecasting

JOB TITLE: One (1) Summer Intern

CONTROL CODE: POR Intern-25-03

SUMMARY:

The Mayor’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB) is the City government's chief financial agency. OMB's staff of analysts and experts assembles and oversees the Mayor’s expense and capital budgets, which fund the services and activities of approximately 90 City agencies and entities.

The Econ group at OMB is responsible for developing economic forecasts in support of the NYC budget process. In this capacity, we monitor and analyze many sectors of the national and NYC economy.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Past interns have had the option of picking a project that matched their interests.

Some of the potential topics include:

  1. Assess the accuracy of OMB’s seasonal adjustment of the NYC Current Employment Statistics (CES) monthly data;

  2. Assemble and assess potential alternate measures of population flows in and out of NYC. These could potentially include the NYC Dept. of Finance public microdata tax files, the American Community Service, and school enrollment records;

  3. Contribute to OMB’s efforts to standardize NYC housing addresses as a step in creating a repeat-sales price index for NYC co-op apartments.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Our staff require strong analytical skills, attention for detail, ability to work independently and an interest in economic data and analysis. We are looking for someone with a background specifically in economics and a familiarity with econometric and statistical environments. While we use STATA, EViews, and R on a regular basis, familiarity with any other statistical software platforms (Python, SAS, SPSS, etc.) is acceptable. Candidates with backgrounds in accounting or business will only be considered if they can demonstrate coursework in economics or econometrics.

REQUIREMENTS:

Undergraduate interns must be currently enrolled or accepted into an accredited college or university. Strong analytical, research and communications skills are required. Candidates must have familiarity in MS Word and Excel

To participate in the OMB Summer Internship Program, undergraduate students must be enrolled or accepted into a college or university.

Qualifications

As of June of the Program year the prospective interne must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year).

NOTE: Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program, June - August each year.
