Posting Summary:

For Summer 2021, THE RITA GOLD EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER seeks an experienced and responsible graduate student for SUMMER 2021 (May through July program with training in April) to be a part-time Assistant Teacher in a play-based educational program with an emergent curriculum serving infants, toddlers or preschoolers. Candidate must be a Teachers College student with at least one year of experience working directly with young children, preferably in a classroom setting.

Job Summary/Basic Function:

SUMMER 2021 Early Childhood ASSISTANT TEACHER: The Rita Gold Early Childhood Center seeks an experienced part time Assistant Teacher for summer 2021 to support a child-led, play-based classroom with an emergent curriculum in either an infant, toddler, or preschool classroom. Program is May-July with training in April.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Work as a classroom Assistant Teacher under the supervision of head teachers.

• Support head teachers in all aspects of education and care of children including facilitating children's play and follow children's lead to enact an emergent curriculum.

• Document children’s development and experiences on a daily basis

• Take increasing responsibility over time as you become more integrated into the classroom team.

• Support other part-time staff in their teaching practice, such as by modeling high-quality teaching and care.

• Prepare, maintain and organize classroom materials.

• Communicate your observations with classroom teachers about students' needs.

• Take responsibility for the classroom in the absence of head teachers, such as due to parent conference, absence, etc.

• Support a welcoming environment for families.

• Write end of year narrative summary reports describing children's experience and development during the year.

• Attend and participate in staff, team, and GA meetings.

• Participate in Center-wide events during and outside scheduled classroom hours such as Curriculum Night.

Schedule and Availability:

• Must be available an average of 16-20 hours per week, scheduled around field placements, during the hours that the Center is open: Summer Mon-Thurs 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 pm and Fri 8:30-1:30pm from May through July 2021. (Fall 2021-Spring 2022 hours, if you apply for academic year position are 8:30-5:30 and Fridays 8:30-1:30. Classroom work hours are adjusted each semester to accommodate students' schedules and field placements such as student teaching.)

• You MUST be a matriculated Teachers College student, registered for at least 6 credits (or equivalent)

• Have at least one-year experience working with young children birth though age 5, preferably in a classroom setting.

• Able work collaboratively in a team setting.

• Must be able to lift young children 6 weeks to 6 years of age in provide daily care such as diapering and feeding.

• Must be available to participate in staff training, team bonding, home visits, and setting up the classroom in days prior to first day.

• Able to attend staff meetings, GA meetings, and staff development days which are scheduled in advance.

We consider our GAs to be an integral part of our Center staff and invite their full participation in all of the Center's special events and activities throughout the year.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Candidates may also apply for 2021-2022 positions as GAs or hourly teaching assistants.

• Experience working with young children in a classroom or lab school setting.

• Knowledge of a second language is preferable since we serve a multicultural group of children and families.

• Pursuing studies related to young children and families, and interest in engaging in how your course of study connects with children and families.
