UNIT: Economic Analysis & Forecasting

JOB TITLE: One (1) Summer Intern

SUMMARY:

The Mayor’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB) is the City government's chief financial agency. OMB's staff of analysts and experts assembles and oversees the Mayor’s expense and capital budgets, which fund the services and activities of approximately 90 City agencies and entities.

The economic analysis unit is responsible for forecasting the New York City’s economy using statistical models. These projections are used for estimating future tax revenues and as inputs into other OMB analysis. In addition, the Econ unit also evaluates the economic impact of City funded development projects and policy changes and identifies potential risks to the City’s economy. All of these tasks require the curation and management of extensive databases of local and national economic data.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The intern will lead the following project under general supervision, with latitude for independent initiative and judgement:

There are several projects to which an intern could contribute, depending on interest. These include: (1) Create a research database of NYC apartment renovations data published by the NYC Department of Buildings and use the data to investigate the impact of 2019 state law changes affecting rent-regulated apartments; (2) Analyze the 2021 Housing and Vacancy Survey microdata, with an extension to the 2023 data if available by summer; and (3) Investigate the implied NYC population shifts due to the pandemic using school enrollment data from NYC and outlying regions.

Qualifications

Candidates must be currently enrolled in a graduate degree program in an accredited college, university or law school.
