Collegiate School Teacher - Academic Support (Interim) in New York, New York

Collegiate School seeks an interim teacher to provide academic support and guidance to lower and middle-school students in a rigorous all boys program. The Interim Academic Support Teacher will work directly with students either individually or in small groups, and also push into classrooms to provide support. The Interim Academic Support Teacher should have expertise in educational evaluations, determining appropriate accommodations, and communicating with teachers, parents, and students about effective strategies. This person works closely with classroom teachers and advisors in implementing a developmentally appropriate sequence of study skills and strategies. The ideal candidate is a dynamic and integral team player who can successfully communicate between divisions, making transitions smooth. This person will have a passion for – and a nuanced understanding of – the unique nature of an all boys program. This person also has an enthusiastic commitment to the importance of building and sustaining a diverse, just, inclusive, and equitable academic environment.

This is a long-term substitute position for a parental leave, ending December 2021 or possibly later.

General Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Associate Head of School for Academics, the Interim Academic Support Teacher is responsible for streamlining and developing all facets of academic support, serving as a resource for students, faculty and families. This position helps create and sustain a dynamic, student-focused and socially and emotionally responsive learning environment, collaborating both within and outside of the school to help students develop effective learning strategies that promote academic improvement.

Essential Duties:

  • Leads the learning support team, facilitating and meeting regularly with team members;

  • Develops and maintains communication and documentation protocols related to academic support;

  • Supports faculty by offering resources, assistance, advice and training to enable faculty to better meet the needs of all students;

  • Supports the implementation of accommodations and interventions;

  • Gathers and tracks data on students requiring support;

  • Provides one-on-one and small-group support/instruction for students, both in push-in and pull-out environments;

  • Works with Division Heads and Department Chairs;

  • Attends support meetings with Psychology Department;

  • Makes regular observations and reports on student progress and achievement;

  • Coordinates information shared between the School and outside specialists;

  • Consults with tutors and evaluators in creating dynamic, individual academic support plans that target the student’s specific learning needs;

  • Attends Parent-Teacher conferences to discuss student progress and identify action plans;

  • Assess the need for and creates a summer program for academic support

  • Monitors new students performance as they enter the school;

  • Works in partnership with admissions when necessary;

  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in education or related field required. Master’s degree or higher preferred. Must possess a minimum of five years of experience as a learning specialist or related role.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability and willingness to participate fully in a dynamic day school located in New York City;

  • In-depth knowledge of learning differences, neuropsychological and psycho-educational testing, and interpretation of testing reports;

  • Full understanding of differentiated instructional strategies across the curriculum;

  • Excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing;

  • Strong knowledge of literacy and math support and enrichment programs;

  • Ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, administration and parents;

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail;

  • Positive attitude, flexible approach and a passion for learning;

  • Ability to follow all policies and procedures of the School as written in the employee and parent handbooks.
