The Project Management Trainee – Technical Services is an entry-level training position, responsible to assist with the estimating/project controls function, as required, in the Department of Program Management. Working with seasoned Managers, the Trainee will receive on the job and classroom training to develop required skills. Learning the Railroad’s work environment and job functions are unique and challenging. The Trainee will learn, in a mentoring environment, to apply his/her knowledge with the specialized requirements of the railroad industry. There will be a series of assignments as part of the development and training period. This will introduce the trainee to the Railroad and its various operating and supporting departments. The position will provide support to the Manager as required. The program will be one to two years in duration. Upon successful completion of the Training Program, the Trainee will be appropriately placed into an entry-level position in Technical Services group.


Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Gain an understanding of general project estimating/project controls procedures, protocols and processes through on the job and internal training. Observe and learn to gain an understanding of project estimating/project controls and the railroad industry. Develop positive working relationships. Assume responsibility and demonstrate initiative to learn and be productive.

  • Participate in developing, planning, reviewing, and coordinating elements of LIRR Force Account and Third-Party Contract work for the LIRR, under its Capital Improvement Program.

  • Review specifications and drawings, maintain files of documents, and assist in the preparation of reports, presentations, research, and studies.

  • Learn and participate in development of project estimates/project schedules of all types.

  • Assist in the development of office and field estimating/project controls related systems.

  • Assist in maintaining liaison between project management team members and internal railroad departments & disciplines.

  • Perform other assignments as requested by Senior Management.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering/Construction or Project Management.

  • Must possess ability to be self-motivated, assume a high degree of responsibility and work effectively under pressure.

  • Must possess strong administrative and coordination skills to organize reports.

  • Must be able to demonstrate oral and written communication and computer skills.

  • Must possess analytical and problem-solving skills to recommend solutions to coordination problems relating to improving office workflow.

  • Must be able to read specifications and interpret construction plans.

  • Strong Business Skills (report writing, letter writing, filing, meeting minutes and spreadsheets).

  • Must possess average to above average GPA.

Preferred/Desirable Skills/Qualifications:

  • Prior related work experience

  • Advanced Degree

  • Professional License/certification

  • Prior project estimating/project controls experience is highly desirable.

Wage Progression:

First 6 Months- $30.244

After 6 months of service- $31.760

After 12 months of service- $33.438

After 18 months of service: $35.016

After 24 months of service $38.271 (100% of Project Coordinator rate)

In addition to meeting the minimum requirements of the position, the selection process may include, but is not limited to a pre-screening assessment (i.e., physical, written and/ or practical evaluation) and interview. Candidates forfeit further consideration in the process if they fail to participate in any step of the process when scheduled. Make up dates/times will not be given. In addition, LIRR employee applicants must be in their current position for the 12 months immediately preceding the close date of this posting and must possess a satisfactory work history, including attendance and discipline record. A record of more than ten sick days without medical documentation in two of the last three years is considered unsatisfactory attendance. A medical examination and safety-sensitive drug/alcohol test may also be required.
