Richter's Orchard Farmworker and Laborer in Northport, New York

2 Fulltime H-2A Seasonal Jobs available 5/1/2023- 11/10/2023.

Manually prune, plant, cultivate, & harvest fruits, apples, pears & peaches. Use hand tools, such as shovels, trowels, hoes, tampers, pruning hooks, shears, & knives. Workers will have to conduct general orchard work including but not limited to filed work, pruning and maintenance of fields, trees and farm equipment. Use tractors & trucks on farm property to move equipment, & supplies and do mowing. Duties include tilling soil & applying fertilizers; transplanting, weeding, thinning, or pruning crops. Construct deer fence & trellises; and repair fences & farm buildings. Picking stones by hand. Set up & operate irrigation equipment.

Clear & maintain irrigation ditches. Stack boxes in the cooler and onto pallets. Harvest fruits by hand. Pick apples for fresh marketing. A minimum productivity standard applies; 100 bu boxes of fresh market apples per day. All fruit to be handled with care to avoid bruising. Fruit injured by bruising, not to exceed 4% also no more than 4% spurs left on the stem of the apple. Workers to be instructed to selectively pick mature fruit according to size, color & other USDA standards. Worker must be physically able to pick tree fruit, most of which is done from ladders with lower branches being picked from the ground. Picked fruit is placed in a metal-framed canvas covered picking bucket with canvas straps that slip over the head and rest on the shoulders.

While working in the field, all cell phone usage is limited to emergency use only. Due to health & safety concerns on our farm workers must understand basic instruction in English.

Requirements:

  • Must have a minimum of three months verifiable experience in performing the tasks described.
  • Must be able to lift 75lbs on a consistent basis throughout the day.
  • Exposure to extreme temperatures.
  • Repetitive movements, extensive walking and frequent stooping.
