Summary

These positions are located within the Nutrition & Food Service at the VA Medical Center in Northport, New York. The Food Service Worker may be assigned to work in one or more functional areas such as Food Service, Food Production and Ingredient Control.

Responsibilities

These positions involve a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed below represent the full performance level of WG-02. At the WG-01 grade level, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of WG-02. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level work, and availability of funds.

NOTE: Some of the positions are part-time (20 hours/week). Benefits and time-off accrual will be prorated and based on your part-time work schedule.

The major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: - Sets up and replenishes assigned station on tray line or dining room with hot and cold food items including meats, vegetables, salads, desserts, bread, butter and beverages; - Serves food buffet style in patient dining room or on a tray assembly line by placing uniform portions of food on plates; - Delivers and retrieves trays to and from patient's bedside; - Delivers nourishments to units or patient's bedside; - Brews coffee, assembles and tosses fresh fruit or green salads in quantity using prepared dressings and portions into standard serving sizes; - Apportions other food items such as gelatins, juices and desserts into standard serving sizes using proper utensils and containers; - Breaks down and cleans assigned area when the meal is finished and returns leftover food to production staff; - Sets up and operates dish machine and/or pot washing machine; - Scrapes, soaks, scours and scrubs the heavier cooking utensils such as mixing bowls and pots; - Performs heavy duty cleaning tasks throughout the food service and related areas; - Receives, unpacks, stores food and supply deliveries; - Rotates stock and assists with inventory; and - Performs other related duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: 6 Vacancies, work schedules may include working weekends and holidays.

Full Time Work Schedule: 6am to 2:30pm or 11am to 7:30pm (7 day operation - work days dependent upon need). Part Time Work Schedule: 6am to 10am or 3:30pm to 7:30pm (7 day operation work - days dependent upon need)

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The person in this position must be in good physical condition so that a full day's work can be accomplished. Work requires continuous standing, walking and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and bending. Will be required to frequently lift or move objects weighing up to 40 pounds.

Work is performed in kitchen areas where the steam and heat from cooking and dishwashing equipment often cause uncomfortably high temperatures and humidity. The work area is well lighted but usually noisy from food service activities and there is danger of slipping on floors where food or beverages have been dropped. Will be exposed to hot liquids, sharp cutting blades, hot working surfaces and extreme temperature changes when entering walk-in refrigeration or freezing units. May be exposes to infection and contagious diseases when delivering or retrieving trays and nourishments to patients. Special gloves, gowns or masks may be required for safety precautions.
