Job Information Director of Engineering in NY, New York

Reports to: VP, Product & Engineering

Target Start Date: February 15 , 2022

Location: has its headquarters in NYC. As a result of COVID-19, DoSomething staff are working fully remote. DoSomething is exploring a hybrid return to office approach with a target of spring 2022. Preferably, candidates will be based in the New York City Metro area, but candidates in other locations within the U.S. will be considered.

The Director of Engineering is responsible for crafting and articulating DoSomething’s architectural vision during an exciting inflection point in the organization’s history. This position is responsible for developing a consistent framework for future technology decisions, linking business and technical architecture, and bridging gaps to deliver a blueprint for developing the enterprise technical structure.

The Director of Engineering will join a rapidly growing team in the next phase of innovation and scale to determine how the business will use and develop products to drive towards impactful and measurable behavioral change in young people through multifaceted campaigns, programming and voter registration initiatives on a yearly basis.


Strategic Visioning & Process Management (50%). Drive modernization of and efficiencies in DoSomething’s technical stack.

  • Drive technical decision-making to ensure architectural development, implementation, and maintenance prioritize simplicity, flexibility, reliability, and performance.

  • Develop and document the principles and frameworks that guide factory or functional area architecture decisions and comply, influence, support and enhance the principles/frameworks for enterprise architecture decisions.

  • Facilitate the development of deployment plans to achieve the target state vision.

    Innovation & Growth (20%). Develop strong vision and methodologies for cross-functional innovation and ideation to ensure DoSomething’s digital products are cutting edge and mission-aligned, as well as support the growth of DoSomething’s membership.

  • Lead the development, maintenance, corporate education and adherence to enterprise technology architecture and standards on an enterprise-wide basis.

  • Provide architectural consultation to the organization and support with software development and code reviews.

    Organizational Leadership & People Management (30%).

  • Grow, manage, and develop a team of software engineers.

  • Partner with peers and collaborate throughout the organization to assess critical technical processes across the organization and drive innovation and ideation.

  • Cultivate a workforce that reflects the communities we serve and advocate for continuous growth and development.


  • You have 7-10 years of progressive work experience designing business processes, process mapping, working on process improvement initiatives and business system design. Testing experience is a plus.

  • You have 5+ years of direct experience running multiple Agile teams.

  • You are proficient with engineering tools and applications such as AWS, Heroku, Terraform, React.js, MongoDB, MySQL, Laravel/PHP and GraphQL.

  • You have working knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies and sophisticated experimentation at-scale. Familiarity with data models, database design, and segmentation techniques, and a background in UX or marketing research strongly preferred.

  • You have experience collaborating with teams of designers, researchers, product managers, and engineers throughout the product development process.

  • You have strong communication skills for a variety of audiences, settings, and formats (e.g.; verbal - lead or attendee for internal/external meetings; written - email, Slack, and internal/external documents).

  • You have 7+ years of experience with hands on software development and architecture

  • You are proficient in GraphQL, React.js, AWS Lambda, Terraform and able to still be hands on with these technologies


  • You tak e a creative and innovative approach to developing solutions to organizational challenges, driving continuous improvement to programs and processes, and implementing effective and smooth product change initiatives across the organization via smart conventional and unconventional methods.

  • You are a strategic thinking visionary able to see and communicate the big picture in an inspiring way; determining opportunities and threats through comprehensive analysis of current and future trends.

  • You know the importance of negotiation and influence ; inviting in key stakeholders in the planning and development of action plans/processes to gain buy-in and commitment and build consensus.

  • You effectively manage projects by focusing attention on critical priorities, creating and executing against project timelines based on priorities, resource availability, and other project requirements (i.e., budget) and you evaluate and monitor the project to determine feasibility and adjust accordingly.

  • You are a team leader who manages and guides group efforts, tracks team progress, anticipates roadblocks and pivoting as needed, provides group and individual performance feedback and actively works with stakeholders to achieve consensus in the best interest of the organization.

  • You believe in young people and are curious about the needs and wants of young people across the spectrum of identity and difference and believe that their involvement in civic engagement, democracy, human services, etc has the power to change young people, their communities and the world!

  • JazzHR maintains secure job board pages. Job boards will default to HTTPS. Additionally, if we were to terminate our contract with JazzHR our candidate data is deleted from JazzHR’s systems in accordance with JazzHR’s Terms of Service.
