Job Description:

The Department of Communication and Marketing at the State University of New York College at Oneonta invites applications for the position of Content Writer. Expectations include, but are not limited to researching, writing, editing, and proofreading of content for news releases, feature articles, web pages, social media posts, emails, and other communications; organizing and maintaining communication workflows; and interfacing with creative and production colleagues.

The Office of Communication and Marketing is a small team of creative professionals focused on strengthening SUNY Oneonta's reputation and supporting institutional priorities through strategic, coordinated efforts to promote the college externally. Communication and Marketing staff have responsibilities in marketing, advertising, management of the college website and institutional social media channels, media relations, content development, digital media production, graphic design, printing, and identity and brand management. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • interviewing campus community members for web features and profiles;

  • writing, editing and proofreading content for enrollment marketing emails, print pieces and other communications aimed at prospective students and parents;

  • synthesizing information provided by campus colleagues to draft news releases and other communications;

  • independently researching and writing news and feature content for the college website;

  • in collaboration with the Office of Communication and Marketing social media team, developing content for the college's institutional social media channels;

  • and curating, editing and proofreading submissions for the college's internal news blog.


Required Qualifications: bachelor's degree; professional writing experience through an internship or full- or part-time work in higher education, public relations, journalism, advertising, or political setting; excellent writing and proofreading skills; ability to meet deadlines; and capacity to work independently and as part of a team. A professional writing sample is also required.

Preferred: proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; proficiency with social media platforms; ability to conduct interviews; experience with strategic communications within an organization having multiple constituencies; photography skills; experience writing for different channels, such as web, email, print, social media, etc.; knowledge of Associated Press style; and experience working with and serving diverse populations.
