Job Description:

The Office of Student Experience at the State University of New York at Oneonta invites applications for the position ofCoordinator of Veteran & Military Initiatives. Expectations include, but are not limited to, serving as the Veteran Certifying Officer for military, veterans, and dependent students, provide opportunities for military affiliated students to engage with the university, and act as liaison between veteran and military affiliated students and the greater community.

The Office of Student Experience is dedicated to nurturing a welcoming and supportive campus community that empowers both new and returning students, fostering their success and commitment to academic pursuits. The office offers a wide array of resources for students including one-on-one mentoring, programming, and individualized outreach. This position, reporting to The Director of the Office of Student Experience, has an11-month obligation period.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Assist with recruiting veterans and military connected students, in collaboration with Admissions.

  • Serve as point person/liaison for the Veterans' Administration and all internal and external military communities for SUNY Oneonta.

  • Serve as the School Certifying Official (SCO) for military veterans, and dependent students.

  • Manage certification processes for military-related students and oversee the proper handling of veteran benefits, ensuring compliance and regulation.

  • Maintain and organize veterans benefit records and facilitate compliance with regulations including audits.

  • Collaborate with university, Veterans' Affairs, and local agency partners in providing holistic support services to our veteran students.

  • Assist veteran students and their families in understanding VA educational benefits; in navigating educational pathways, disseminating information, and connecting them with relevant resources and programs available to student military, veterans, and dependents.

  • Ensure adherence to government regulations and provide support to students, including institutional and government-regulated assessments.

  • Serve as point person in planning campus wide military connected celebrations and engagement opportunities including, but not limited to, planning campus wide programming for Veterans' Day, participating in the local community events related to veterans, and military families, such as Otsego County Veterans' Coalition.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in closely related field

  • Three (3) years' experience and/or training that includes one or more of these areas: career counseling, career placement, academic advising, veterans counseling, and records maintenance.

  • Experience with successfully working in a customer service setting.

  • Demonstrated use of technology.

Preferred:

  • Master's Degree

  • Prior military service and/or demonstrated service to the military community in a nonprofit or educational capacity.

  • Experience working in a student-focused office in a higher education setting.

  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to a changing environment and handle multiple priorities.

  • Experience working with and serving diverse populations.
