Cornell Cooperative Extension Ag in the Classroom Educator - Oriskany, NY in Oriskany, New York

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oneida County is looking for an Ag in the Classroom Educator.

The Ag in the Classroom Educator serves as a member of the 4-H team to assist with implementation and evaluation of educational programs and activities. The Educator will be responsible for promoting program objectives and plans in 4-H Program with emphasis on Agriculture in the Classroom.

The Ag in the Classroom Educator will coordinate and deliver established Agriculture in the Classroom curriculum with the aim of fostering awareness, understanding, and appreciation of how we produce food and fiber, what we eat, and how we live by helping teachers, students, and their communities learn about and engage with agriculture and food systems. The individual will deliver established curriculum to help youth understand the connections between agriculture, the environment, and people. The Educator will assist with the planning and evaluation of the delivery of the established educational program goals. I Interact with the public through classroom presentations. The individual will assist their Supervisor with activities to foster the program with community leaders. The Educator will assist 4-H staff with summer programing as necessary. This person will appreciate and promote diversity in all interactions with program participants, staff, volunteers, and the public.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field or Associate Degree plus 2 years transferrable program/functional experience.

  • Experience relevant to the role of this position.

  • Ability to meet travel requirements, including valid driver’s license and DMV check.

  • Ability to work flexible hours which will include weekends and evenings, possibly overnight travel.

  • Ability to organize, manage, and prioritize multiple tasks, deadlines, requirements, and priorities to complete work in a timely manner and within established deadlines.

  • Proficiency with windows-based software including use of the internet and Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Excel.

  • Ability to relate effectively to co-workers, advisors, community, and professional leaders.

  • Ability and willingness to work with diverse audiences and maintain cultural sensitivity.

  • Ability to communicate effectively through oral, written, and visual channels using traditional educational tools and methods.

  • Ability to present effective and relevant educational lessons to target audiences in group settings.

  • Ability to carry supplies and equipment with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Ability to climb stairs with or without reasonable accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with diverse populations.

  • Ability to work with interpreters to facilitate conversations in multiple languages.

    Position Responsibilities & Essential Functions

Program Delivery – 80%

  • Utilize established program resources and materials in program work.

  • Select and prepare lessons plans and provide educational programming to the targeted audiences based on established Agriculture in the Classroom subject matter and existing research-based curriculum.

  • Deliver creative educational programs, based on existing materials, to impact audiences through a variety of delivery methods, with support from supervisor.

  • Provide educational programs to students in traditional classroom settings at local public and private schools as well as in non-traditional settings, such as home-school groups and summer recreation programs.

  • Occasionally apply existing subject matter knowledge and utilize existing research-based curriculum to create lessons plans to deliver educational program.

  • Serve as a subject matter resource for staff, volunteers, program participants, and other groups as they are identified.

  • Represent CCE before the public, community leaders, government officials, Cornell, or other land grant universities in a professional manner as part of program delivery.

  • Interact with program participants always representing CCE in a professional manner.

  • Serve as a team member and cooperate with the entire Association and 4-H Program staff to achieve Association program delivery goals.

Program Evaluation – 5%

  • Collect surveys for analysis of the program, looking for the strengths and weaknesses in order to provide feedback to supervisor to strengthen programming.

  • Interact with program participants and schools to collect program data.

  • Based on established program parameters, interpret evaluation data for funders.

  • Assist with the analysis of collected program evaluation data.

  • Assist in making recommendations for program improvement.

  • Implement program evaluation as designed.

Direction – 5%

  • Provide input to Supervisor in planning the delivery of educational programming through a variety of methods.

  • Assist with planning the delivery of established educational program goals.

  • Assist Supervisor with identifying key relationships to build/sustain with community leaders and stakeholders.

  • Assist in identifying program needs with Supervisor, advisory committees, and program participants.

Coordination/Operation – 5%

  • Provide routine/administrative tasks to support the delivery of established educational program goals; i.e. confirming events; gathering materials and resources for program delivery; and ensuring delivery to offsite program locations.

  • Maintain records of class participants, complete reports, and accurately collect and prepare paperwork as required for the program evaluation process.

  • Coordinate, compile and organize existing program resources and program materials.

  • Prepare and submit accurate expense reports, mileage reports, receipts/supporting documentation, and/or vouchers in a timely manner per established policies and procedures.

  • Provide data and information to assist with preparation of reports, impact statements, and success stories for funders, advisory committees, Board, and others as requested.

  • Maintain effective professional relationships with other agencies, organizations and businesses that promote effective communication and facilitate continued programming efforts.

  • Transport self and/or program materials/resources as necessary as part of performing position responsibilities.

Professional Improvement – 5%

  • In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes and Association priorities.

  • Participate in all required orientation, training, and/or in-service meetings and trainings as scheduled/required.

  • Pursue personal growth through expanding personal knowledge of the total organization and through updating techniques and technical skills relating to the position.

  • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension including but not limited to attendance at staff meetings, timely reporting of expenses, working with other staff, general marketing of Cooperative Extension programs and other duties as assigned.

  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance and punctuality.

  • Be familiar with and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard.

    Position Details

    This is a full-time (37.5 hrs/week), benefits eligible, non-exempt position. Compensation for this position is $20.50 per hour.
