Description of Responsibilities:
Reporting to an Associate Director for Residence Life and Housing, the Assistant Director (AD) is a full-time, live-on, twelve-month Residence Life and Housing (RLH) leadership position with a work schedule that includes day, evening, and occasional weekend responsibilities. The Assistant Director is responsible for providing experienced leadership, mentoring, and role modeling to the residential community professional and student staff, and resident students. Residence Life and Housing (RLH) leads the development of the strong residential character of the SUNY Oswego campus and provides a common experience for most of the undergraduate community. Situated within the Division of Student Affairs, RLH plays a critical role in furthering the mission and vision of the Division and in achieving institutional enrollment goals through cutting-edge business services, direct interface with the holistic needs of students and their families, and nationally recognized residential education practices. RLH works to advance student attainment of General Education goals with residence hall initiatives organized through a curricular approach to residential education. The Assistant Director is a key member of the RLH leadership team and will assist in the development and implementation of the RLH mission and goals. Through a collateral assignment within the department, the Assistant Director will provide leadership in student staff recruitment and training or operations. The Assistant Director will work collaboratively with a wide range of campus partners to support the overall success of maintaining a holistic residential community focused on student learning and success.
Leadership & Supervision:
Motivate, direct, and supervise full-time Residence Hall Directors and indirectly supervise Assistant Hall Directors and Resident Assistants; provide supervision or indirect supervision to Assistant Hall Directors utilizing a developmental approach focused on professional growth, best practices, and completing tasks in a timely manner
Foster a sense of positive community in the residence halls; use creative and innovative methods to personally connect to residence life staff and students
Provide training; conduct individual meetings to develop and review goals and outcomes achieved; conduct periodic performance evaluations as appropriate and create plans for individualized staff development and formally evaluate staff on an annual basis
Serve as a member of the departmental leadership team to design, create, and assess department activities and retention initiatives to improve the residential experience, which fosters student success
Create an inclusive community supported by trained staff that upholds the code of conduct for Residence Life and Housing and the University; provide appropriate mediation, counseling, and referrals for individual students and staff as needed
Advise and train Residence Hall Directors on the implementation of the College conduct system Assign and adjudicate student conduct cases in cooperation and consultation with the associate director for student and community advocacy and office of student conduct.
The Assistant Director is also responsible for a collateral assignment for one of the departmental functions related to student staff recruitment and training or operations (see below).
Appropriately involve residents and staff in the decision-making of the residential communities and department and expand their involvement in service activity, leadership, peer education, and intellectual exploration
Distribute, approve and audit the expenditure of area funds for student programming initiatives
Assist in the recruitment, selection, and training of departmental staff
Participate in departmental, divisional, and College committees and task forces as a member or chair as needed to support the mission of Residence Life and Housing and the University
Develop and maintain positive professional relationships with campus partners
Serve as the first point of response for supervisees during the work day and serve in the rotating leadership on-call rotation for emergency response on nights and weekends
Support the planning and coordination of hall and area programming initiatives aligned with divisional and departmental core values and learning domains
Interface with parents and families at University events and respond to concerns in a manner that provides accurate information, fosters student development, and maintains good public relations
Verify and approve payroll for all student operations services staff within their assigned area
Work closely with RLH Leadership to assist in the opening and closing of all campus residence halls each academic semester
Participate in divisional college committees and task forces as a member or chair
Perform other duties as assigned.
Collateral Assignment- RLH Operations
Student Operation Services (SOS):
Coordinate the front desk and recycling operation for Residence Life and Housing, hold monthly meetings with SOS supervisors, assess procedures for efficiency and effectiveness
Develop and implement departmental training of SOS supervisors and staff using best practices and data-informed decision-making related to their operational responsibilities
Refine and implement the SOS evaluation and assessment process for staff
Collaborate with the Marking and Communications Coordinator to develop recruitment of SOS staff; create and oversee the hiring process for returning and new SOS staff
Partner with Campus Technology Services to oversee and maintain inventory of departmental technology
Co-Chair the Operations housing committee in conjunction with the Associate Director of Facilities and Operations
Work with the Associate Director to monitor student payroll in Subitup and Time and Attendance systems.
Liaison with Conference Services and other partners to coordinate all aspects of camp and conference programs related to Residence Life and Housing
Work with the Associate Director for Facilities and Operations with the planning and management of the summer conferences program, including staff selection and training, logistics, emergency response
Develop and maintain relationships and serve as the primary site contact for conference groups
Supervise the Summer Hall Director and the Conference Coordinator(s)
Coordinate housing arrangements for guests requiring on-campus housing during their camp or conference.
Collateral Assignment - Staff Recruitment, Selection, Training, Evaluation, and Recognition
Recruitment and Selection:
Collaborate with the Marketing and Communications Coordinator to develop recruitment plans and marketing materials for student and professional Staff searches
Coordinate recruitment of student staff, including information sessions, interview processes, candidate review and selection, and contract management
Serve as a member and/or chair of departmental professional and graduate assistant search committees
Lead professional staff training and development inclusive of summer and winter intersession training, academic year in-services, and conference attendance
Lead a planning team in the development of resident student staff training and assisted in the development of resident assistant in-services conducted throughout the year; including an emphasis on topics of diversity, equity and inclusion, professional development, academic enhancement, leadership, and day to day duties of residence life staff
Develop positive working relationships with campus offices to support the training program for professional and student staff.
Coordinate student staff performance evaluation process conducted by Hall Directors of their staff, including the management of employment records
Provide support to professional hall staff navigating staff accountability and job action.
- Lead a planning team in the development of staff recognition throughout the year culminating with the end-of-year student staff celebration.

Master's degree at the time of application
Minimum of three years full-time post-master's experience as a live-in professional with direct responsibility for supervision of college residence halls.
Master's degree in Higher Education, Counseling, or a related field
Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations
Effective supervisory, communication, and organizational skills
Experience educating students within a student conduct process
Understanding and appreciation of the need for regular interaction with students and staff
A commitment to assisting students in achieving academic and personal success.
