The New York Racing Association, Inc. Veterinary Department Administrator in Ozone Park, New York

The Veterinary Department Administrator provides necessary administrative support for NYRA veterinary department and associated reporting programs, including pre-race inspection of in-today horses, furosemide administration, and out of competition and blood gas sampling. Communicates with veterinarians to receive information about Lasix treatments given; i.e., time and place of issuance. Serves as primary liaison between stewards and veterinarians during morning pre-race activities. Accompanies veterinarians into the barn area to identify horses and document chain of custody during out of competition sampling and blood gas testing.

  • Oversees the scheduling of Lasix and Exam vets in order to ensure appropriate coverage on race days.

  • Works with the Director, Veterinary Department, the Sr. Examining Veterinarians and the facility department timekeeper to ensure proper payment for all Veterinarians. Enrolls Veterinarians on the biometric time clocks.

  • Edits the barn and stall report and prints necessary Exam and Lasix reports to distribute to veterinarians.

  • Disseminates scratches and changes to Exam and Lasix veterinarians during the course of the morning in a timely fashion.

  • Monitors administration times and receives attendance to ensure Lasix treatments are completed for each race.

  • Maintains a database of blood gas testing, out of competition testing, and horses working off the vet’s list, and regularly updates and distributes the information to the stewards.

  • Packs and ships samples to the New York Drug Testing Lab.

  • Assists NYRA vets with out-of-competition and blood/gas sampling by maintaining paperwork and records and acting as a witness for sampling;

  • Maintains and prepares reports on the percentages of horses receiving Lasix treatments.

  • Works closely with the stewards to ensure scratches and changes are identified and reported in a timely and accurate matter.

  • High School Diploma

  • Strong administrative skills. Proficient in word, excel and outlook.

  • Strong interpersonal skills. A collaborative, team player.

  • Detail oriented and able to work in a dynamic and fast paced environment.

  • Ability to work at all 3 racetracks, including Saratoga Race Course for two months in the summer (travel stipend provided).

  • Ability to work a racing schedule which is typically Wednesday to Sunday and some holidays.

  • An interest or experience in thoroughbred racing preferred.
