Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Scope of Position

The intern will be a member of a technical group involved in the development, design and implementation of a measurement system used to characterize optical fibers. The candidate will focus on performing experiments to validate and improve optical models.

Responsibilities

  • Support engineers and scientists in designing and developing optical measurement systems.

  • Run experiments in a laboratory setting

  • Analyze and interpret data

  • Document test methodologies, results and provide recommendations

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled and pursuing a graduate degree in Electrical Engineering, Optics, Physics, Chemistry, or related field.

  • The candidate must have completed a minimum of two courses in Optics or Spectroscopy

  • Background in optics or optical engineering.

  • Laboratory experience – college lab courses acceptable.

  • Basic data analysis, image processing and statistical skills.

  • Programming skills.

  • Must be available for 10 weeks during Summer 2025 (May-August 2025) with a graduation date of December 2025 or later

  • Be interested in working for Corning, Inc after graduation, if presented with a full-time job opportunity.

  • Be willing to work at the posted job location

Desired Skills:

  • Optical metrology.

  • Experience in Labview programming.

  • Knowledge of basic spectroscopy.

  • “Hands-on” laboratory research experience.

​The range for this position is $1,635.00 - $3,185.00 biweekly. Starting pay for the successful applicant is prescribed based on geographic location, nature of position, and year in school.
