Paul Smith’s College is a small, private master’s, baccalaureate, and associate degree granting institution located on a 170-acre campus on the shores of Lower St. Regis Lake in Adirondack Mountains of northern New York. The Adirondack Watershed Institute (AWI) is a program of the college and has been working closely with students, faculty, and community partners since 1992. AWI’s mission is to protect clean water, conserve habitat, and support the health and well-being of people in the Adirondacks through scientific inquiry, stewardship, and real-world experiences for students. AWI’s two flagship programs are aquatic invasive species spread prevention and limnology and freshwater research and monitoring. We work with a variety of community partners to foster cooperative approaches to watershed protection. We are committed to providing educational programs and opportunities for college, high school, and middle school students to inspire and inform future generations and to build careers in natural resource management.

Job Description: The Paul Smith’s College Adirondack Watershed Institute is seeking entry-level Research Technicians for the summer of 2024. Positions run from March through October and are scheduled for up to 40 hours per week, depending on the assignment. This position's primary responsibility is supporting AWI staff with the numerous research and monitoring projects on water bodies and terrestrial environments across the Adirondacks. The position is based at Paul Smith’s College and includes both outside field work and indoor work.

The Research Technician will assist with both aquatic and terrestrial work as well as laboratory work associated with the AWI Environmental Research Lab. Daily operations associated with the aquatic/water quality position may include sample preparation, water quality analysis, cleaning glassware, and data processing, as well as collecting physical, chemical, and biological samples from lakes and streams. Field-based terrestrial ecological operations may include breeding bird point counts, deployment of infrared trail cameras and/or automated recording units, small mammal trapping and handling, deployment of track tubes for detection of small fauna, timed amphibian and reptile searches, invertebrate surveys, and vegetation sampling, as well as basic data summary and analysis methods including digitizing, summarizing, and drawing conclusions from data collected during field surveys.

Qualifications:

· College course work in environmental science, chemistry, biology, geology, or other natural sciences

· A genuine interest in environmental science and desire to gain experience in the field

· Ability to work in inclement weather outdoors, including on motorized and non-motorized watercraft (i.e. canoes)

· Ability to spend extended amount of time on your feet

· New York State Driver’s license and driving record acceptable to the College’s insurance carrier

· Ability to perform duties independently and proactively

· Experience working in a laboratory setting

· Experience working with excel
