Position: Student Assistant for HEOP Summer Program

Status: Part-time approximately 25 hrs/week, non-exempt,

seasonal (July 6 – August 3, 2024)

Department: Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP)

Reports to: Director of HEOP

Salary: $15.00/hour

Description:

The HEOP Pre-first-year Summer Program is a four-week program of non-credit courses designed to prepare incoming students for a successful college experience. HEOP will hire two Student Assistants (SAs) who will be responsible for tutoring, peer counseling, supervising students in the residence halls, assisting the faculty with outdoor lab trips (hiking and canoeing), and planning and attending social and recreational activities.

Student Assistant training and planning sessions will be provided by the HEOP Director, Assistant Director/Counselor, and other pertinent departments on July 6 and 7, 2024. The incoming students will arrive on Sunday 7 July and the HEOP Summer Program classes begin on Monday, July 9, and the students leave campus on Friday, August 2nd. The Student Assistants will leave after all the students have departed or on Saturday morning, August 3rd at the latest.

The Student Assistants reside in the residence hall with the students. Room and board included. The program will cover activity expenses for each SA.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Counsel students in areas of adjustment to college life.

  • Provide tutorial assistance in math, writing, and other subjects as needed during evening or weekend hours as needed.

  • Maintain daily tutoring and peer advising/counseling records.

  • Attend staff/faculty orientation and weekly meetings.

  • Assist faculty with outdoor lab trips (hiking and canoeing).

  • Arrange social and recreational activities. Plan, attend, provide leadership, and participate in evening and weekend activities.

  • Assist in the operation of the residence hall (safety, maintenance, emergencies, etc.).

  • Promote student compliance with all college policies per the student handbook. Provide consistent enforcement of these policies as needed.

  • Be a positive role model. This includes expressing a positive attitude toward all aspects of the summer program and demonstrating appropriate coping and communication skills.

  • Assist with other duties as needed or assigned by HEOP professional staff.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of at least one year of study at Paul Smith’s College.

  • Ideal candidates will have a minimum GPA of 3.0.

  • Ability to work with a broad range of diverse individuals and groups to form a safe and inclusive campus community.

  • Strong desire and commitment to working with others.

  • Have excellent communication skills.

  • Outdoor leadership skills are an asset for this position.

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and a motor vehicle record that meets the College’s approved driver standard highly preferred.
