All applicants must be able, willing and qualified to perform the work described in this job description and must be available for the entire period of employment specified above.

Workers will perform a variety of manual tasks related to the planting, cultivating, harvesting and packing of apples, pears, cherries, plums, asparagus, berries, corn, squash, beans, root crops and tomatoes. Duties include tilling soil, picking stone, transplanting, weeding, hand tilling, pruning and tree training. Workers will sort, pack and load harvest fruit in the field and level and load fruit to be transported. Workers will use hand tools such as shovels, trowels, hoes, tamps, running hooks, shears, hand saws and knives. While packing, workers will sort apples according to size, color and grade before packing into boxes, weigh, stamp and stack according to the quality and method of the employer.

As the need arises, workers will perform other farm related duties such as: construct trellises; repair and paint farm buildings; operate tractors and farm equipment for the purpose of tilling soil, mowing, cutting brush, planting, spraying; applying water, pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers to crops; record information about crops; inform management of crop progress; identify plant, pest, weeds and monitor for disease to assist in determining applications of fertilizers and pesticides; set up maintain irrigation, repair and maintain farm vehicles.

Workers may supervise crews of up to 15 workers during apple harvest. Harvest productivity must be at least 80 1-1/8 bushel boxes per 8 hours worked of bruise free fruit for fresh market and 100 1-1/8 bushel boxes per 8 hours of work for processing apples with no more than 10% bruising. Workers will be directed to pick all fruit from tree or to selectively pick according to size, color or crop conditions and state of maturity and other USDA grade standards. Workers must be willing to work in varied weather conditions with temperatures from below 0 to 90+ degrees(F) with possible wet conditions. Beginning and ending times will vary depending on the condition of the orchard. Workers should report to work in their own suitable clothing. Workers must be able to handle and climb ladders up to 20 ft long and weighing approx 2 pounds per foot and filled picking bucket weighing 40 lbs. Employer will furnish to workers without cost all tools and equipment required to perform all duties assigned. Workers are required to have proficient English language comprehension in order to maintain Federal food safety regulations, pesticide application safety and operation of farm equipment.

Requirements:

  • Must have a minimum of 3 months experience in performing the tasks described.
  • Exposure to extreme temperatures
  • Lifting requirement of 80 lbs.
  • Repetitive movements, extensive pushing/pulling, extensive walking, and frequent stooping/bending.
