Sexton (Part-time) - Job Description Overview The Sexton is responsible for work relating to a wide variety of functions and activities that support the ministries of Christ Church. The Sexton will work as part of a team that includes another parttime sexton and a part-time housekeeper. While the Sexton is ultimately responsible to the rector, the Parish administrator will supervise the sexton. The duties of the sexton will include cleaning, light maintenance, and minor repairs of the church building and grounds and other tasks such as setting up for events and activities and to support large parish wide events. This is a part-time position with a minimum of 6 hours per week to approximately 20 hours per week depending on the time of year and the availability of the other members of the team. The Sexton should be available on Sundays from 6:30 am to (approximately) 12:30 pm to open and close the church, assist in the setup and cleanup of coffee hours, and perform other duties as needed. General and Ongoing Responsibilities While Christ Episcopal Church has contracts for a cleaning service (x2/month), snow plowing, and a lawn service, the sexton may be called to support each of these activities. 1. The sexton will, as needed, clean the church and parish house including sweeping, dusting, vacuuming, mopping, cleaning bathrooms, emptying trash and recycling containers, bringing trash and recycling to the street, and resupplying the bathrooms. 2. The sexton will, as needed, be responsible for treatment and snow removal of our walkways and sidewalks. The ability to use a snow blower is required. 3. The sexton will, as needed, be responsible for cleaning the memorial garden, digging holes for internments, and for making sure the walkways are cleared of leaves. 4. The sexton will regularly set up rooms throughout the church building as needed for upcoming events or seasonal cleaning in consultation with the parish administrator. This includes moving chairs and tables and setting up auto-visual equipment. 5. The Sexton will be responsible for light maintenance and minor repairs of the church buildings and the rectory. The maintenance will include the changing of batteries and light bulbs (within reach of a ladder), changing filters, touch-up painting. The minor repairs could include plumbing and electrical and such repairs will depend on the sexton's skills. 6. The sexton will assist in the setup of our Sunday coffee hours which will include making coffee, setting out food, and cleaning up. 7. The sexton will run errands as needed. These errands include, but are not limited to, shopping, going to the post office, bringing items for maintenance or repair. 8. Support repair and service calls and contractors working on the church building and rectory. 9. The sexton will respond to emergencies on church property, render help as needed, and contact authorities as needed. 10. The sexton will perform other duties as directed. Qualifications and Requirements 1. Have the ability to work with a diverse group of people, be polite, and positive. Be reliability, responsible, and exercise initiative 2. Have knowledge and skill, or the ability to learn, of cleaning procedures and processes, products and equipment. 3. Have knowledge, or the ability to acquire knowledge, of basic building maintenance. 4. Have the ability to perform basic repairs and safely use the tools to do so. 5. Have the ability to work independently and be proactive with limited supervision. 6. Be physically fit and able to lift and carry items up to 50 lbs., work from a tall ladder, kneel squat and stand to perform duties. 7. Be a licensed driver and have transportation. 8. Agree to and abide by the Safe Church Policies' and the Sexual Harassment Policies of the Episcopal Church, the Episcopal Diocese of Rochester, and Christ Church. 9. A confidential background/CORI check shall be performed as a condition of employment.
