Overview

The Engineering Intern will perform data mining, analysis and reporting on engineering processes to measure performance and provide actionable insights, to help identify opportunities to improve product development efficacy and efficiency. The individual will collaborate with key engineering and business stakeholders across multiple Veeco locations to understand objectives and identify and manage relevant Business Intelligence (BI) dashboards. Working closely with the engineering leaders and key IT personnel, the Engineering Intern will help develop tools to visualize KPIs on critical engineering and product development projects, and provide visibility of performance gaps to drive continuous improvement in processes to address the root causes of those gaps. This position reports to the VP of Engineering Processes and Systems and works closely with the Director of Engineering Services and the Sr. Information Systems Manager.

Duration:

Full-time employment during the Summer(40 hours a week)

Part-time employment during Fall semester (minimum of 16 hours a week)

Responsibilities

Analyze data trends in Engineering Change management (ECR/ECO) process, including analysis of changes by type, and correlation to engineering programs and activities. Analyze patterns in engineering iterations and identify opportunities to improve processes for throughput and efficiency.

Assist in migrating engineering project, task, and priority information from various discrete databases into unified, common engineering resource and task management database. Working with engineering leaders and program managers, assist in managing the database to ensure data integrity.

Manage existing and develop new reports from the engineering resource and task management database. Support ad hoc report requests.

Develop interactive "waterline" charts to dynamically connect changes in priorities from Product Line Managers to the engineering resource and tasks management database.

Analyze project status reports for various engineering programs compared to requirements from key stakeholders. Participate in the development of a digital visualization management board to quickly provide status for all engineering programs to key stakeholders in various functions at multiple levels across the company.

Mine and analyze data on engineering program resource plans compared to actuals. Identify trends and gaps, and provide comprehensive, concise, easily digestible reports on findings to key stakeholders.

Update existing and create new BI dashboards to provide real-time engineering performance insight and provide visibility of systemic process gaps and root causes.

Qualifications

Actively pursuing a bachelor's degree, with a major in Data Analytics, Computer Science/IT, Industrial Engineering, Applied Math or related area of study. Juniors and above

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize and analyze data, with a good understanding of data correlations

Advanced Excel capability, including complex formula analysis, pivot table analysis and macros is required

Solid working knowledge of Python is strongly desired. Experience in drag-and-drop programming

Adept with visualization tools (e. g. Power BI, Tableau), visualizing data trends and presenting analysis results

Excellent communication skills (written, verbal and visual) and comfortable communicating with key stakeholders

Capable of working independently or collaboratively, with strong organizational and time management skills
