Description

We are currently seeking Aquatics Director for Camp Felix, 2020 (Staff Training: July 27 – August 2; Camp Dates (Monday – Friday): August 3 – August 28). Staff must be available to work training week and all 4 camp sessions. Staff and campers go home for weekends.

The Aquatics Director works under direct supervision of the Camp Director to achieve Camp Felix goals and objectives by supervising the swimming program at Camp Felix which allows campers to learn new skills, develop their motor and coordination skills, improve self-esteem, and relieve stress through physical exercise. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Prepare pool for proper use.

  • Oversee the implementation of the written DOH safety plan's swimming procedures.

  • Ensure that safety rules and procedures are formulated and posted.

  • Ensure proper equipment is present at the pool, including lifesaving devices.

  • Coordinate staff training regarding the aquatics program.

  • Supervise daily pool chlorine and pH count.

  • Test and mark each camper’s swimming ability.

  • Implement/supervise buddy system and pool entry and exit.

  • Supervise all staff and campers participating in swimming activities.

  • Provide AM swimming instruction.

  • Respond to all pool emergencies.

  • Directly supervise all lifeguards.

  • Communicate with Camp Director about all aquatics maintenance issues to reach immediate resolution.

  • Evaluate equipment and supply needs at camp start and participate in end-of-season inventory process for all aquatics equipment/supplies; submit a list of items needed for next year to Camp Director.

  • May serve as a lifeguard if needed.

  • Participate in pre-camp training (7 days).

  • Other duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities (during off periods, mealtime, evening activities, special events, etc)

  • Help supervise campers and implement their schedule of activities.

  • Ensure safety, personal hygiene and physical/emotional well-being of campers.

  • Assist with all special events (i.e. Olympics, Open House, Evening Activities, etc.)

  • Helps to prevent dangerous situations by minimizing risks and responding to emergencies as needed.

  • Provide leadership and guidance to campers including encouraging participation in activities.

  • Work collaboratively with other counselors to best meet the needs of the campers.

  • Assist during mealtime, if necessary.

  • Assist during transportation to/from camp and/or bus loading/unloading at camp.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SPECIAL NEEDS REQUIRED HS/GED diploma required. Must be at least 21 years of age. Knowledge of or experience with summer camps. Must have at least:

  • one season of previous experience as a camp aquatics director at a New York State children's camp; or

  • two seasons of previous experience consisting cumulatively of at least 12 weeks as a children's camp lifeguard at a swimming pool or bathing beach which had more than one lifeguard supervising it at a time; or

  • 18 weeks of previous experience as a lifeguard at a swimming pool or bathing beach which had more than one lifeguard supervising it at a time; Knowledge of and experience working with children. Supervisory experience required. Experience teaching children how to swim preferred. Must be responsible, dependable, and concerned about safety first at all times. Must be able to communicate effectively and professionally with lifeguards, other staff, campers, and supervisors. Must be enthusiastic, approachable and dedicated to helping children enjoy swimming and being in the pool.

Certifications required:

  • Certified progressive swimming instructor or Lifeguarding certification.

  • Lifeguard management certification.

  • Acceptable CPR Responding to Emergencies and First Aid certifications.

  • Progressive Swimming Instructor certification. Must be available for training week/weekend and all 4 weeks of camp.
