Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement SYEP Seasonal Staff in Queens, New York

Job Summary

Under the leadership of the Program Director, the Seasonal Staff will work collaboratively with the Job Developer to support the SYEP program. Seasonal staff will be responsible for traveling to worksites to retrieve documents, check in with enrolled participants to ensure the safety as well as the development of meaningful activities and work experiences. Seasonal Staff are a critical support role to the parents/youth of the community and in developing meaningful relationships with participants.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

Program Planning and Implementation

  • Assist in the implementation of activities that support project based learning that are research-supported.

  • Communicate regularly (written /verbal) with the program director, job developer and educational specialist.

  • Insure the respectful treatment of property, keeping the spaces used by the program clean, and restoring room set-up at conclusion of daily program activities.

  • Attend meetings both internally/externally to remain abreast of current information.

  • Build positive relationships with program participants and families through participant accomplishments, parent orientation and workshops.

  • Monitor growth and development of youth

  • Utilize conflict mediation techniques.

  • Adhere to and enforce the proper code of conduct for purposes of growth and development.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Travel to worksites to retrieve documentation for contractual /agency purposes.

  • Attend training as required.

Requirements

Statement of Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

  • Some knowledge of cognitive, social, physical and emotional development as it pertains to a specific age group.

  • Clear effective communication skills with community, staff and funders a must (written/ oral)

  • Computer literate.

  • Able to recognize need for intervention and make appropriate referrals.

  • Flexibility, patience, resourcefulness and a willingness to learn

  • Ability to work independently and creatively

  • Experience and/or willingness to work with diverse ethnic populations

  • Ability to effectively engage diverse ethnic populations and outreach in local communities

  • Bilingual English/Spanish a must preferred but not required.
