Summary:

New York Edge is seeking a creative, passionate and knowledgeable individual to fill the role of Visual Arts Program Manager. In this full-time role, you will provide support for the educational needs of all after-school visual arts activities, which take place in approximately 130 New York City Public Schools. The activities include but are not limited to Studio Art, Digital Media Arts, Filmmaking, Photography, Comic Illustration, Cosmetology and Fashion Design. The Visual Arts Program Manager will take a lead in curriculum writing and development, facilitate projects, organize cultural trips and events, conduct outreach and recruitment, and perform daily administrative tasks to ensure highest quality programming.

Full-Time, Year Round

Schedule:

Mon-Fri, 35 hours a week (some evenings and weekends may be required)

Remote:

Partial. This position will require you to report to schools within the five boroughs of NYC.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Responsible for all Visual Arts projects and the overall mission of the art department

  • Strategizes the basic framework for all NYE Visual Arts after-school programs

  • Facilitates for the educational needs of the NYE Visual Arts activities and staff, including but not limited to: Studio Art, Photography, Filmmaking, Comic Illustration, Cosmetology, Fashion Design, Digital Arts

  • Maintains a pool of teaching artists for recommendation and placement by interviewing candidates regularly

  • Conduct observational site visits per the direction of the Director of Art to assess art specialist instruction, provide guidance and offer constructive feedback to support the teaching staff

  • Offer individual guidance to improve instruction, lesson development, and classroom management to all art specialists, as needed

  • Assist in the preparation and facilitation of a yearlong series of Visual Arts Professional Development Workshops.

  • Designs and maintains the Visual Arts Curriculum aligned with NYC and National standards for School Year & Summer Programs

  • Assist and work with the Art Department staff to plan, prepare and conduct several annual events including but not limited to, Art Day, Girl Redesigned, and the Spring Arts Showcase.

  • Helps organize, lead and cultivate the curriculum team of writers and offer support where needed

  • Helps designs and lead a year-long sequence of visual arts professional development workshops for all visual arts staff

  • Initiates and maintains relationships with art organizations and vendors

  • Offers individual guidance and one-on-one assistance to improve instruction, lesson development, and classroom management to all art specialists

  • Coordinates Visual Arts Educational opportunities including: guest artists, Street Art for Schools, Cultural Trips and Showcase Gallery events.

  • Visit sites, assess instruction, provide guidance, and offer constructive feedback/evaluation reports

  • Assists and orders materials, supplies, tools and equipment for the visual arts programs. Maintain positive relationship with our long standing vendors

  • Help plan and set-up art department events

  • Research and organize student trips to arts venues or professional development trips for teachers

  • Schedule and accompany teachers and site staff on shopping trips to Materials for the Arts

  • Must pass pre-employment background investigation including but not limited to employment history and criminal background check

  • Other duties assigned as it relates to the role

Experience and Skill Requirements:

  • BA or BFA in the Arts is required; MFA highly preferred

  • Minimum of three to five years of work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is required

  • Must have passion for NYE mission and demonstrated interest in the field of education and youth development

  • Candidates who are qualified in more than one activity are preferred

  • Must have a personal art practice and experience in a variety of visual art media

  • Must have knowledge in visual arts terminology, history and resources

  • Must have prior experience successfully teaching and instructing youth in one or more visual arts genre

  • Experience working with kids, teaching to various age levels and/or working inside the public schools is required

  • Must drive and have a car

  • Proof of Covid-19 vaccination is required

The Visual Arts Program Manager will be required to report to multiple school buildings in an effort to support after school programs and will interact with students, staff, parents and school administration while following all local, state, and federal Covid-19 guidelines, policies and mandates.

At the time of offer and acceptance, the job requires safety and security clearances through the Department of Education and Department of Health.
