Agricultural Stewardship Program Summer Assistant
Position Available
Seasonal Program Assistant
needed for Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Suffolk County Agricultural Stewardship
Program based at either the CCE main office (423 Griffing Ave, Riverhead) or
the Long Island Horticulture Research and Extension Center (3059 Sound Ave,
Riverhead). Starting date is May 2021
and ending date September 2021.
Applicant must be able to work between 8am-4:30pm
Monday thru Friday.

per hour

Job Responsibilities:
The
CCE Agricultural Stewardship Program focuses on the development, education, and
implementation of best management practices to minimize the impact of
agricultural inputs on surface water and groundwater. The seasonal program
assistant will provide general support for the CCE Agricultural Stewardship
Program by assisting with the maintenance and data collection for several
applied research and on-farm demonstration projects. Projects may include but
are not limited to scouting for insects and diseases in various agricultural
crops, planting, weeding, plot maintenance, checking of insect traps, and other
duties appropriate for field experiments.
Qualifications:
- High
school diploma or equivalency and 6 months volunteer work experience.
- Knowledge
of Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Must
be able to lift 50 lbs.
- Must
be reliable and punctual.
- Ability
to work physically outside, sometimes in inclement weather, performing various
farm and field activities.
- Ability
to work flexible hours during work week; sometimes mornings and/or afternoons.
- Ability
to understand and implement written and oral instruction.
- Must
be able to perform duties in an efficient and timely manner.
- Ability
to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Ability
to meet travel requirements associated with the position; valid NYS driver’s
license and personal vehicle for occasional on-the-job transportation, 3 years
driving experience and pass a motor vehicle screening.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Current
enrollment in a college agricultural or science related field.
- Familiarity
with agricultural research methods.
